The Hospital was a stone's throw away

At least, it was a kidney stone away.

I went to my doctor last week for severe and intolerable pain in my right side, only to end up in the hospital for kidney stones. I never dreamed that the first time that I would ever spend a night in the hospital it would be because of a kidney stone.

I was just curious as to how many fellow os'ers have had kidney stones and what measures you and/or your doctor have/are taking to either prevent others or to cure the one that you had.

I have 3 stones(at least I did last week. I have one now), and I am going to my doctor again today to see if the large one(size of a marble) is still in my kidney or if its moving. If its moving, then I have to either have a surgery where they break it down to make it passable, or have surgery where they go and take it out and then place stints in so that I can easily pass any stones that may form later down the road.

I am 28 years old and was told that my chances of developing another stone within the next 5 years is about 65%. I don't like those odds.

Sorry for posting this, but was just curious as to what I may be looking forward to and find some other people that know the kind of pain that I went through as nobody that I associate with has had a stone and seem to "joke" at the fact that I was in the hospital for this condition.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Drink water. Lots and lots of water. I'm addicted to the stuff, so, hopefully, never get a stone. I guess drinking a lot of things like coffee, soda, etc. and not enough water can lead to kidney stones. Water helps flush the kidneys and prevent them from forming.

I drink water quite a bit. I do drink coffee each morning, which I won't give up.

I don't like those odds either. I hope I never get one of those things as I have only heard how painful they can be. My co-worker was hospitalized on and off for 3 weeks with them due to some bleeding one caused and a nurse's carelessness with something. He said it was awful. Hope you feel better soon and put this behind you!

me too. Its weird because the other day I went to work and went about my normal day without any problems. Then overnight that night, I kept waking up and didn't go to work the next day due to the pain.

I feel for your co-worker. I was told that it could take up to 3 weeks to pass a stone. Man it sucks.

well... back from the doctor and all he said basically was "piss twice and call me in the morning".

I get to go back in 4 weeks. They drew blood, had me piss in a cup and sent me on my way. They also told me to let them know if I pass anything :

Yes I am. Not something I want to be king of. I haven't updated on my situation in awhile, but I still have a stint in. So basically I've had a stint in since May 10th. I have 15 more stones up in my kidney and if this different stint doesn't work I'm off to Duke to get cut open and them take all those stones out and fix my kidney. As to the OP. Drink plenty of water, add lemon to it as it makes the water more acidic and it helps break down your stones and keeps stones from forming. Also stay away from Mountain Dew soft drinks, and Sun Drop they are infamous for developing stones, and if your stone was made of calcium stay away from cheese, and dairy products.
