Why do I do this to myself?

Why do I feel the need to constantly update my video sports games? Like many here, I have been enjoying sports video games since Atari. And it sure it exciting to open the packaging of a new game. But the last few years I have discovered a painful pattern after the box is opened:

    1. Spend several hours learning the new controls/features.
    2. Spend several more hours trying to find those sliders and settings for a good game (And I am not nearly as bad as some of the fine folks here).
    3. Realize that while some things have been fixed/enhanced/added, there are things that are now broken or removed.
    4. Finally I come to terms with a game, play it a couple times and then the next version is ready to come out.

I just joined the next generation 2 months ago when I got my 360. I like the console and some of the images & cutscenes do look great. But I wonder if I am really having that much more fun than if I was still playing games from 2004 on the old Xbox???

Sorry for the rambling. Just thinking out loud.

I have to go now. I have to read about NBA2K8 that is about to hit stores....

It is an illness like myself and many of my fellow OS brethren have. We need to start a support group.

I think it's because that with the older gen u knew new games were gonna be great and all but u didn't have exaggerated expectations from the console. With the next gen u're used to thinking that everything is possible but it's not always true. So u get disappointed with some games and move to the next game. Maybe after a while it will change because u'll get used to it. Any way, have fun as much as possible, it's just games

With the last gen, it seemed that the first batch of games were rather stripped down, but by year 2 the games had everything and more than the previous gen. But with this generation, some games are in their 3rd iteration and still missing alot of the things were are used to.

I think people partially expect the impossible. We hear "next gen" and expect almost a playable version of reality. I think that over the past 10 years our expectations have grown. On PS1, then PS2/Xbox our expectations weren't high. We got amazed by polygonal graphics on late PS1/early PS2. The first iteration of NCAA on PS2 was crazy awesome/amazing. I just don't know that they necessarily have that easy "jump" in improvement. However we expect that amazing step and are disappointed when we don't see it.

One reason for this is the rendered videos game developers feed us.

Yup-Ea comes to mind but just look at any game mag and the eye candy they throw at you in commercials, not just EA-everyone!
Plus, for me-I think I raised the bar somewhat when I dropped a fat bundle of cash on a new system and don't feel justified in my purchase yet due to bugs, alot of glitches and stripped down or just unplayable games. Will I go out and buy the next flavor of the month sports game though? probably, because either I'm a idiot or waiting for the second coming of next gen games. Final note:I do enjoy sports more than anything on video. I do think I can be hard on games that won't deliver sim results after hours of getting under the hood of the game with adjustments.

I blame Square and Final Fantasy VII for that.

                  Count me in.

Why do I need a roster update that I could probably apporximate myself and then have extra gameplay time instead of doping out a decent new slider set and learing all the workarounds?

I'm seriously thinking of sticking with NBA2k7, NCAA06 and MLB '07 this year b/c they play great and I won't need to burn 10-15 games (of my increasingly limited time for gaming).

Glad I got Madden (PS2) this year tho, best one in a long time (IMO).

I didn't give in for a new NFL title this year. So I am getting excited about playing NFL 2K5 which has been on my shelf for a few months. I can just jump in and play. I already have my sliders & house rules etc.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, your post just seemed like another "oh that is so insignificant, there are much bigger problems we shouldn't worry about this stuff" kind of post. Fact is it's something most gamers have done at one point or another and I know exactly where he's coming from. By the time I have an updated roster set, worked on all the sliders, and figured out all the controls, it seems like I'm tired of the game and didn't get my money's worth.

That's ok dude, no hard feelings. I'm a gamer myself
I remember having NBA 2Night 2002 and ond day I didn't go to work because I was sick, so I spent like 3-4 hours on getting the rosters updated for 2003-04. By the time I finished, I could play 1 game and that's all. Had enough of it.
