Re: Success Tech Shooting in Downtown Cleveland

Why am I not surprised to see jmood partaking in another argument in another thread.

It really is getting ridiculous that these school shootings keep happening. What the hell is wrong with people?

So what's your solution, ban mentally ill people from college?

It's the same thing as STDs; if you make it public, it's not going to make everything better, people are just going to stop getting tested. If you ban mentally ill people from college or dorms, smart kids with mental illnesses will just stop getting them diagnosed.

What are you basing this political correctness thing off of? Have you been to a high school recently and read the school handbook? I guarantee you that most if not all will have a section on threats and punishments that can be received from threatening people.
But my point, which you seem to be trying hard to miss, is that the reason people are afraid to report these possible threats is our PC'd-to-death culture where nobody is to be singled out for being "odd." It seems like in a lot of these cases, after the shooting has taken place, people come out of the woodwork to talk about what a weird person the shooter was, how afraid of him they were, etc. Well maybe someone should alert school officials, authorities, or whoever else to the fact that someone is a nutjob before they go and shoot up a school instead of after.

I'm sure all high schools have a great plan of action if someone makes a violent threat and that's great - hooray. But if nobody who hears the threat reports it, that plan's kinda worthless.

No, but it's ridiculous for medical personnel, school officials, whoever, to be knowledgeable about someone's potentially dangerous mental illness and then inflict that person, unmedicated and untreated, upon the rest of the students as if he were a normal person. They can obviously go to college, but their condition should be fully disclosed and they should be fully medicated and treated so that innocent people aren't harmed by them. That's just common sense....

I'm not saying everyone with any kind of mental illness should be treated like that, but someone categorized as a violent threat to themselves and others can't just be let back into the wild and made someone else's problem.

What you seem to be ignoring is that this isn't a case of a guy who didn't talk to people, it's a guy who made a threat to a school. People are singled out all the time if they make threats and they are usually dealt with. For whatever reason no one did anything about this guy but again, that has nothing to do with being "PC". Of course people come out after the event because there are so many people who you might think act "weird" that do absolutely nothing to anyone.

I agree with you on this though but there was really nothing that Virginia Tech could do in that situation. He was in counseling and people knew about his condition but it's against the law to tell everyone about his medical history and they can't force someone to take medicine.

You're average person who will commit a terroristic act is from the middle east.

The average male in the 16-24 age range who will kill someone with a firearm is black.

The average serial killer will be a middle aged white male.

The average kid who will shoot up a school is mentally unstable.

What is your master plan to differentiate the killers from the plain old mentally unstable?

Then why is it legal(and mandatory) to have committed Sex Offenders tell their neighbors?

Edit: It is also mandatory to tell your sex partner if you have any STDs. It's illegal to cover it up.

Because they committed a crime. I'm not for it since people who are arrested for being caught peeing in public can be considered a sex offender but that has nothing to do with medical records being released to the public and is a completely different situation. And I don't know why you're asking me that question as if I wrote the law.

It wasn't supposed to be a question, as if I were asking you.

It was essentially a rhetorical question.

Then don't quote my post next time. It looked like you trying to insinuate that I was lying about the law.

I quoted your post because you brought up the fact that medical history can't be released. I was questioning that law, not your thoughts.

Next time I'll just change your name to "United States Government" if that will make you happy.

In response to warning signs, the people they have interviewed on the news so far, didn't even know who the kid was, including the 2 kids who were shot. He got in a fight and was suspended, but I've not heard anything that he threatened to come in with a gun. Not saying he didn't, the news has been erratic here with 2 major stories going one.

Rachel Metzger, who lives across the street from the boy accused of shooting four people before killing himself today at SuccessTech Academy, described the shooter as a "very hyper kid." "He's constantly yelling at his mom or anybody else," Metzger...

This is from the neighbor of the shooter.

Also, this is a good school, a school with kids with good grades and high achieving kids. Just proves it can happen anywhere.
