Serious question, what's the difference between a goon and a thug?

Not sure if you're asking me but when it comes to hockey I've always considered them to be one and the same.

Not specifically you, just looking for a general idea of the difference. In hockey it's always "goon", in basketball it's always "thug". I always figured they had the same derogative meaning. Outside of sports, what would the difference be? Is there some sort of mafia hierarchy? Any OS crime lords available to chime in?

edit: if it's a racial difference I understand letting the topic die so no one gets in TOS trouble. sorry I didn't think of that initially

A goon is a hired thug outside of sports, and probably why it's used in Hockey for goons (thugs hired specifically to be thugs on the ice).

Thug's use in basketball is more racial in nature (both with racist intent and not), so it's probably best to leave that at that.

Goon, when talking about hockey players, just means enforcer. For example, Rinaldo for the Flyers. Thug would be a dirty player, someone like Marchand.

I actually enjoy hockey fights. I hate baseball fights, where guys get held back by their team yet they continue trying to look tough, lol.

My fiancee also doesn't watch it often. We went to a AAA MiLB game this past season and upon our arrival the home team was up 1-0. She said "Oh cool they already scored a point!"

I don't talk about engines, hockey, soccer, tennis, and many other topics/sports because I don't know enough about them to sound intelligent.

Beaming isn't even a term
Hitting rookies for the heck of it doesn't happen. There is a reason behind it and being a rookie is not the reason.
You then use a dramatic tone to try and get the point across with your flesh line

All I did was point out the inaccuracy of your observations. You brought baseball into the conversation and then said you don't really watch it often. That was 100% clear from what you said!

The use of throwing straws is something is never heard lol. I've heard of grasping for straws though, maybe that's what you meant.

If you want to use the old straw man argument go for it.

My only inaccuracy was stating that you don't watch baseball. You apparently have watched it enough to not know basic terminology or reasons why batters get plunked.
