It's just something I noticed a couple months ago that reminded me of other words that get hot. Once you start noticing it, every single time it's used stands out. One of my favorite examples is "arbitrary". When Good Will Hunting came out I'd never heard the word before, then suddenly it was all over the place. It's cooled back down now, but for a couple years it was massive.

Another one that bugs me (and this doesn't really fall into the same category, but whatever ), is the word ill-advised. I've never heard this word in non-sports context. It's always an ill-advised shot or ill-advised pass.

I won't fault anyone for trying to expand their vocabulary, it just annoys me when it seems everyone is latching on to the same word. But I understand Narrative sounds better than Story, Arbitrary sounds better than Random, and ill-advised sounds better than Dumb.

I've heard ill-advised before but you're right about that namely being used with <s>sports</s> J.R. Smith.

I remember now actually that baseball had a huge thing where people kept calling incorrect traditional wisdom narratives when they really meant false narratives.

I think I ranted on here about "elite quarterback" being the phrase that everyone throws out there now. It's not thinking for yourself. Not expanding vocabulary.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

To continue my gear grinder, I'm tired of seeing the same comments in internet debates. I'm not even talking about the "internet tough guy" theme (or should I say "narrative" ), but so many people just say the exact same derogatory crap. Calling the other person "kid" or "bud", adding "do you even watch the games?", and finishing with some smug insult.

Why can't people on the internet argue/debate like adults? Why does everything have to be a fight? I love good discussion, just not when the parties involved constantly antagonize one another, especially when they're not even original. Give me a clever retort, factual evidence, and a cited reference over the typical nonsense any day.

I think part of it is that the anonymity of the internet brings out our primal aggression and need to be right. There are no real life consequences to those types of actions.

You would think that but ESPN has Facebook comments and it hasn't changed.

My sister nags me about my eating habits sometimes. I want to slap her. She's an over the top health nut. There has to be a happy medium.

I love my pizza, wings, and fries dammit.

oh, and take those Browns to the Super Bowl!
