Would you use steroids?
I'm not saying steroids are safe, but it seems like many athletes are doing this under the supervision of a doctor, with a more controlled dosage which may or may not be safer. So if the negative side effects were negligible and the substance was undetectable, would you use it to get an edge and possibly make millions as a professional athlete. I'd like to say I'd take the high road but I don't know, I hate working for a living. I'm way past my prime so this really does not apply to me, but I am interested in what some of the younger guys or gals on the forum have to say who are still involved in athletics.Tags: None -
Re: Would you use steroids?
I was a guy that pitched in college and topped out at about 85 MPH. I had excellent location and decent movement and another 5-7 MPH would have probably done wonders for my career, but it's just not something I could have done. Besides the physical risks, I wouldn't want to deal with all of the other crap (acne break outs, shrunken testicles, sexual dysphunction, mental outbreaks, etc.). Plus, to me it would seem obvious to all of my peers. It's just not normal for a guy to absolutely blow up in the course of a few months (thought it can happen naturally, it's not the norm)...so the money would be great, obviously, but there's probably a good chance it would ruin you as a person....and like any other thing, when do you stop? If you seen instant results, you're going to want to keep them up, which likely means you'd have to go on a maintenence program, so that crap is always in you.
I got the new Playboy yesterday and there is an interesting interview (and a rather nice pictorial) of Bon's ex-wife who talks about the symptoms and side effects that happend to Bonds. Who know's if she's telling the truth or just trying to make a buck, but she basically says he turned from a decent guy to an absolute monster because of that stuff.Comment

From knowing this guy I have also seen the "monster" side of him come out at his girl, and it wasn't pretty. I definitely think that rage/aggression is a serious side effect.
Long story short...no I would not take steroids. But damn 5-7 and a better feeling arm sound really good to me, that's a legitimate 92-93 touching 95 with my 2-seam fastball which has a lot of movement. Throw in a splitty and horrible slider and I could be a reliever! What's that, about $5M a year. Damn't
On 2nd thought....Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
I believe that anyone that says they wouldn't use steroids in a professional sports setting to make them elite is lying. Making more millions in a few years time to provide for your family is a huge motivatior. I couldn't care less about the "cheating" aspect. All athletes can arguably be seen as "cheating" compared to athletes of an era ago.Last edited by bkfount; 10-11-2007, 09:48 AM.Comment

I haven't thrown a baseball in a couple months, I still have that fantasy of just pumping it up one time and 95 coming to me. It could happen! WITH STEROIDS!Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
Would I be a negilible talent like Nefi Perez or would I be an actual talent like Shawn Merriman?
If I was Perez, hell yeah.
If I was like Merrimen, nah.
On the side note, how small would my testicles become? Small enough to be offset by owning fancy cars?Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
if I was in that position, i really can't say if I would or not.. knowing what it does to the body, I would not in any way do them.. however, if it gave me a chance to make big bucks playing a professional sport (also weigh the fact so few get the chance to do it, competition is fierce, etc), who knows...
I've done the "drinking" thing in college - got that out of the way.. haven't done anything else.. (occasional drinks every now and then).Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
I don't use steroids and I have no interest in using them but I don't understand why they're outlawed. All outlawing them does is make people import them and use unsafe levels due to not having them administered by a doctor.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
You say 'if the negative side effects were negligible'...why wouldn't these be legal and all athletes would be using them. The fact that they do mess you up big time is why they're illegal. Not worth the chance IMO, my life is too important. What good is money when you can't spend it? Plus I don't want raisins for testicles.Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
I would say no. I've never touched the stuff or any drugs for that matter. People are always looking at only the physical side effects. I also consider the honour of competition. If I'm a sprinter and I win the gold medal because I'm a cheater I would never be proud of my accomplishment. I would always feel a sense of disgrace. I'm the kind of guy that if he gets the wrong change back from the cashier, I give them the money back. Fair is fair and cheating with steroids makes you a cheater.Comment

Re: Would you use steroids?
I'd like to say differently, but I know I'd do the same. Hell I saw below average players get more playing time in HS when they started juicing, I never did, I never played. I am not thinking that was a coincidence.Comment
