    Re: Grave Yard Shift

have fun... I have worked the past 3 1/2 years on that shift (well, really a 3-midnight shift, but have been known to stay until 4 am).. right now I am headed back to that shift, which I am a little PO'd about (mentioned in the Steve's Thursday thread)...

as far as I go, I am still "wired up" until about 2-3 am, then get up at around 10 am..

It won't be as hard as you think, but once you get the graveyard shift in your blood, it's hard to get out. That's how it is for me anyway.

O yeah my Shift hours are 7pm - 7am or 7am - 7pm, depending on day or night shift. 12 hours.

I've done the 12 hour night shift before, it was painful as hell at the beginning but you adjust to it, and I probably never slept as well as I did after one of those shifts. It really wasn't that bad.

                I agree with that one.

People always say, oh you'll never really get used to it, it's bad for you. Those people are all full of it imo.

I worked during the summer from 12 am - 8 am. It really wasn't bad... I came home and slept from like 9-5 and I still had the rest of my night. Once you adjust it's peanuts. Just think, while you're sleeping most people are working anyways, so what are you missing? I actually enjoyed it more. I'm still working every Friday night from 12am - 8am and I'm still a full time Senior High School student. There's no such thing as a sleeping pattern in my life..

                    Re: Grave Yard Shift

I''ve been working the grave yard for 6 years. It sucks and I wouldn't take it if you don't have to. At first it didn't seem that bad, but there are ALOT of days I come home and spend the whole day in bed trying to fall asleep. On a normal day I'll wake up around 4pm but I will still feel tired the entire day. Not sleepy tired, just lazy tired. I start getting sleepy tired right before I have to go to work.

And the worst part about working nights are the weekends. If you have something to do on the weekends during the day it'll be very hard to adjust because you've spent the entire week in bed at that time of the day.

My sister did it for a nursing externship this past summer and she got used to it pretty quickly.

Just gotta make sure you get your hours of sleep after you get out of work.

biggest problem is trying to wind down after work. Most people can't go to bed for a few hours after they get home.

I did it for about 6 months. My mom has done it for 25 years. Some tips are to cover your window and not allow any sun to get into your room and you'll sleep a lot better and it will help getting used to faster. Thick black blanket is what i used. My mom pust tinfoil on the window to refelect the light and also black out the window. Little extreme but she knows the sun has the power to turn on clocks in your system so you have to block it out. Thats how you get over jetlag quickly.

I've been on the 'yard for almost 3 years now...and love it. I work 4 days a week...from 2200-0800...I work Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri. I usually get home around 8:15ish. I take a shower, eat a quick snack, then off to bed. I'm usually asleep by 9 am...and sleep straight to about 4-5 pm.

When I get home Saturday a.m. I usually set my alarm for 2ish or so. Then I am up the rest of Saturday and go back to "normal" sleeping hours for Sat/Sun/Mon night. Tuesday I usually take a nap before I go back to work Tuesday night. In my room I have blackout curtains and usually run an air purifier because it makes a constant noise which drowns everything out.

I love graves. No traffic, weather is cooler in the summer, and the bad boys are usually out to play!

I worked overnights as a radio DJ for a while. It's not hard to adjust; only takes a day or two for your body-clock to get used to it. What sucks is the fact that you're going to be mostly isolated in your non-work life: won't see the sun much, sleeping your days away, etc.

Some people really like it, but my memories of it aren't very fond.
