Your body will adjust over time, but I know when I was doing that a few years back, I put up a dark brown blanket in front of the window, that way it looked dark in the room. It worked, but adjusting back to normal hours on the weekends really screwed me up.

Invest in some really dark shades/blinds or even indoor shutters. If you have trouble sleeping whe it is light outside, you will definitly want something that will black out your room.

The other benefit of being a graveyard worker is usually the pay is slightly better for graveyard shift workers than day shift workers just because it's not an easy spot to fill in most cases.

i worked at the ABC affiliate here in DC, WJLA, and my first year i was a part of the morning show shift, which was from 3am to 11am....that was brutal. at first it was just bizzare going to bed at 7pm and gettin up at 2am....there were so many times i was driving to work and would see a car full of people on their way from a fun night of debauchery and drinkin, and there i was on my way to a fresh day of work. i did get used to it....but was psyched as a pig in manure the day i learned i was going to be on day-side.

Yea most places should be paying some sort of a night differential. And also if you work Sunday night through Thursday night, most places pay extra for Sunday night as well.

Do you still work there? When I moved from Denver, and didnt have cable or anything hooked up, that is the only news channel I could watch for 2 weeks.

Seriously, I had that shift for near two years in the begining. I had serious problems falling asleep when I got home in the morning.

I tried everything, bought very dark curtains, had a fan running to give me something to block out all the outside world noises.

I eventually went back to normal hours after I moved up from running routes. Now I run the warehouse and a 4 10's day shift.

One thing I used to do was drink Calomile tea about a hour or 2 before you sleep. It naturally makes you tired and sleepy. look for it at the supermarket tea section.

                    Re: Grave Yard Shift

I used to work the night shift, and I never had the issues thats ome people have with not being able to do thing, being anti-social due to being a night owl... For the first four days of my week I would go to bed at 1pm and get up at 8pm. Work 10-7.. Come home and unwind and relax until nappy time. For that 5th day I would only sleep 2-6pm. By the end of my last shift I would be tired and ready for bed when I got home. I would then sleep 7:30-2pm. Take a nap in between on my two days off and be able to stay awake until it was sleep time back at day one. I was always up in the day, I got to hang out with friends. My weekends were never boring and anti-social...

Try it and you'll see what I mean. You will be sleepy in like 2 hours.

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead, but wow.

                        http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/11/29....ap/index.html

Next month, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, will add overnight shift work as a probable carcinogen.

The American Cancer Society says it will likely follow. Up to now, the U.S. organization has considered the work-cancer link to be "uncertain, controversial or unproven."

We had a good time talking about this in briefing last night. Sarge even printed out the article and stuck it in our mailboxes. I guess what's meant to be is meant to be though. I love the 'yard. Except tonight...it's raining and cold here in Vegas. Not a worse night weather wise to be a cop...

Really, the whole "it causes cancer" thing is a bit over done.

Anything can cause cancer because cancer is freaking random. Cancer happens to people that don't even do things cancer related. It just happens.

So why even concern yourself with staying away from carcinogens? Everything is a carcinogen.
