    So, I fainted last night...

I was in the shower at about 8:15. Since I'm a guy that likes long showers, I had already been in there since about 8:00. As I was going to wash my face, I started getting that dizzy feeling that you get when you rise from a lay-down position too quickly. I thought it would just go away, but it didn't... it worsened. Within that 30 - 45 second span or so, I just kept talking to myself... trying to regain composure. I was thinking to myself, "No way you are going to pass out. That's impossible. That's a myth. There's no reason for me to pass out, and this isn't how it starts." I leaned against the shower wall with my forearm and forehead, trying to focus, when suddenly I wake up, lying on the ground, tepid water splashing my face, and my legs sticking out of the stall from underneath the drapes.

I shot up quickly, hoping nobody caught me lying there, when I suddenly realized: "... I just fainted!" I then felt major pain in the back of my head and tasted blood in my mouth. I spit it out, turned off the shower, grabbed my towel, ran out of the stall and bathroom and into the dorm hall where there were some other people. Feeling dizzy again, I faintly yelled, "Somebody help... I just passed out in the shower!" Then I fell again (due to imbalance this time), and stayed there till the police and paramedics came.

So, that's the story. They didn't bother with a CAT scan because I vividly recall the incident, but that doesn't mean I didn't suffer a concussion. The official diagnosis is "syncope", which, if you Wiki it, I'm sure you'll find out what it is. Basically, I was in the same condition as someone that faints because of seeing their own blood getting drawn out with a needle, only from a different cause. I was in the hospital for five hours, with an initial heart rate of 90 BPM with an instant decrease to 60 BPM. That was the most alarming issue to them... making sure nothing was wrong with my heart. Thankfully, nothing was. Unfortunately, the worst trauma is to my head, and I'm going to serve almost all of Wednesday night in my bed... with the exception of food and bathroom breaks.

Fainting is weird. You feel like you skipped a beat in something. You don't ever quite notice that you fell asleep or you woke up, but at the same time, you knew that time passed by. I can vividly recall everything that happened in my mind, even though I may not be able to describe it all. Waking up was the ultimate weirdest feeling in it all, however. Again, it can't be explained, but it wasn't a good feeling, knowing that I hit the back of my head on the floor without anything breaking my fall. Have you guys ever passed out/seizured before?

Wish me luck in getting better! I hope to God nothing like this ever happens again.

I'd imagine fainting feels similar to being knocked out. You seem to be fine and blink, then when you open your eyes, you realize it wasn't quite a blink lol. Feel really woozy and dizzy afterwards. The worst part about the dizzyness is the fact that it is intensified by the fact that all your senses are heightened in your body's "high alert" mode. The human body is an amazing machine... Something happens so it makes your heart beat faster, boosts your blood pressure, and heightens your senses with adrenaline... Amazing to think in the blink of an eye your body can do all of those things to help itself make it out of the situation alive.

That's crazy man. Hope you feel better!

I remember one time I got that "dizzy" feeling and I went to my stand up dresser and leaned against it. I ended up having that dizzy feeling and was involuntarily shaking for like, 10 seconds. It was something I had never experienced before or since. Weird stuff.

I'm surprised to hear they didn't do a ct scan, I'm by no means second guessing the doctors that took care of you but through my experience working in the medical field anytime someone comes in complaining of a syncopal episode (one especially where they fell and hit their head) a ct scan of the brain is pretty standard just to rule anything major out.

Did they give any reason why one wasn't necessary? I'm sure they had good reason not to do one if they didn't, just curious though. Was your blood sugar low or anything like that?

*Edit* I'll add that I know protocols on different complaints (chest pain, shortness of breath, syncopal episodes, etc, etc.) vary from place to place so if they didn't give any specific reasons why no ct scan its probably because they don't do them unless they have symptoms pointing to one really being needed.

I'm going to assume that immediately running around after fainting isn't the smartest idea in the world.

Re: So, I fainted last night...

Never fainted before but I have been knocked out twice. Once when I was 11 I was racing a kid in a tennis court and ran into the poll that holds the tennis net. When I woke up the kid I was racing was gone and my friend was at the other side of the court picking grass out of the cracks in the cement (I guess that was more important then my health)
2nd time I caught a pass while playing football with friends, the pass made my spin around and I fell across the goaline backwards hitting my head, when I woke up everyone was back in the huddle (only a few seconds).
Both times I just got up and continued on.

15 minutes in the shower, and you're just beginning to wash your face? Odd to me, is all.

Just kidding. Get well soon, man.

                    Yea man get well soon.

The feeling you described reminded me of having a concussion. I had 3 while playing football, and each time the next day or so I would randomly get that dizzy, light headed feeling. Doctors told me it was a normal post concussion occurance.

Vertigo is a type of dizziness felt as a shift in a person's relationship to the normal environment (a feeling that the room is spinning is common) or a sense of movement in space. http://www.healthscout.com/ency/68/462/main.html

Re: So, I fainted last night...

Thanks, all. I just woke up and read all of your posts, so I don't remember who to answer directly. But yeah... I guess they just didn't feel like one was required, but my head just feels terrible all around now as opposed to just in the back. But I'm sure that's rather normal. I'm not getting up much today.

And to another poster, normally my showers are like 25 minutes. LOL it's not like they're completely productive the entire 25 minutes... sometimes I'm just in there to be in there, like getting warmer or something. I love showering and daytime napping, just so sometimes I can transfer thoughts for no reason. Yeah, I don't know why I began washing my face then. The weird thing, though, was that I did in fact apply the stuff to my face and had yet to rinse it when I was feeling dizzy, hence the largest reason I didn't just go out of the bathroom at that one point to ask for help. So, when I woke up, I guess enough water hit my face to get rid of all of the face wash, meaning I could have been down there for about a minute. It couldn't have been much longer, though.

I'm just surprised that nobody was there during that time, though. At the dorm, the bathrooms are pretty public.

Again, thanks. I'm just hoping this doesn't occur again is all, and the scariest part was when I told my mom what my blood pressure was at the hospital (120/70). Though that is very normal, I've never had it that high. And, the paranoid and worrisome person that she is, she wanted them to check for enlarged heart, like my best friend died from a few years ago. Thankfully, it wasn't that.

Maybe I'll take shorter showers from now on.

I doubt it has anything to do with the shower length. I took like taking long showers and doing basically a lot of nothing while there. The shower is my santuary and I do most of my creative thinking there. The one place no one can really bother you.
