That's cool and it doesn't sound weird to me at all. 
U're right, to make it official the groom needs to break a glass - actually a glass thet u use to drink water from - not a dangerous glass, of course (and it's wrapped with aluminum paper around it so there's no mess). Just before the end of the ceremony the Rabbi tells u to repeat what he says (it's about Jerusalem) and at the end u're told to break the glass with your heel (the shoe's heel) and everybody yells: Mazel Tov!!! Not sure if any of u happened to be aroud Jewish people while a glass is getting shattered or something, but usually they all yell Mazel Tov!! That's pretty annoying 
Actually we can get married on every day, unless if it's saturday or Friday (but a lot of people get married on Friday afternoon - and it's usually a lot cheaper).
There are some days like Yom Kipur and other special days that we can't get married on, but usually most of the week is fine.
