Nah, the game was on during this entire fiasco and it made it much harder to be alive.

          Thank God you're still alive.

I think you can file some kind of complaint against the Super. I don't know to who or whether it's worth it or not but there's something definitely wrong about the picture you've painted here.

That's definitely a grounds for a lawsuit. If you have told them about it before, at the very least, you most likely could withhold rent or only pay a pro-rated amount for how ever long it takes them to fix it. Plus they should pay to have all your clothes, carpet, couch, etc cleaned to remove the smoke smell and pay or give you another apartment to stay in until they get it done.

Well, the only thing we've told them is that we want a new stove. I don't think anyone here thought it was a danger. We just wanted a shiny new one since we've been here like 12 years and have had the same one since we moved in.

I don't know how I could file a lawsuit to something that no one was aware of or even thought to really check.

I'm guessing the only thing I'll get out of it is a new stove.

Damn dude. Scary stuff. Reminds me of the time my idiot brother tried to make french fries on his own when he was thirteen. He ended up burning half the kitchen down.

Glad to hear it was avoided. The world is getting colder for some reason. Today, my boy's coworker got shot up over some BS, and so young too. It's always good to stay alert. Take care bro.

The pilot light. It's always on in a gas stove.
Once the leak let enough gas into the stove to hit the pilot....it lit up.
Yankee....you and your neighbors are VERY lucky.
You(living in N.Y.) must remember the woman who just died a week ago when her apartment exploded due to a gas leak. She made it for a couple of days before she succumbed to her burns.
Remember this for the future....well first....call the F.D. and get the f#ck out!...
but if it's just a fire...you can put it out....but if it's a GAS fed fire(natural gas, propane)....you MUST shut it off at the source first.....it will then usually go out once the source stops feeding it...but if it was a larger gas leak....and you put out the fire first....the leak could have spread to a point where there would be a major explosion once it found another ignition point.
Best to just leave it to the nutjobs at the F.D.

Re: I almost got blown to pieces tonight.

The FDNY did cut the source. Luckily everything was done pretty quickly.

I'm just happy that it happened while I was up or that I wasn't listening to music on my headphones. If I hadn't heard the fire I don't know if I would have smelled it in time.

I'm online minding my own business when I hear crackling coming from my kitchen. I go to investigate to find my stove on fire.

Really. The stove is on fire and it's not even on.

There's a nice little fire rising higher and higher and it's already burning through my wall.

So I rush to the bathroom and get a large bucket of water and dump the whole thing on my stove. Fire goes down but it won't let up. That fire is coming from inside the stove and something is triggering it.

I try telling my mom to call 911 and she's over here panicking. So I strip the phone from her hand and tell the operator to get me the Fire Dept. They come in about 5 minutes while I sit and watch the fire just do it's thing.

FDNY shuts down my gas and rips my stove away from the wall. The gas man comes about 30 minutes later to check it out and tells me that I had a gas leak inside the stove.

He keeps telling me that I'm lucky that the whole thing didn't just blow up.

                          So I'm alive and well.

                          That's my experience.
I'm glad that you and your mom are ok. Next, hopefully there won't be.........get the trucking out of there.
