Thank goodness you didn't hit any switches during that time, sounds like any little thing could have blown the house to pieces!

I know this sounds crazy, but he's lucky it DID start burning. Because it was already ignited, the gas was burning off as it came out of the leaking pipe, with no chance to build up. If it had a chance to build up and fill say the room and THEN found an ignition source like you mentioned. BOOM!
Of course, the problem with what happened to YankeeP...is that there was a good chance the fire would take off and that could have had just as tragic consequences as an explosion.
Like I said.....lucky, lucky guy YP....and heads up keeping your cool and getting everyone out safely.

Carlos, I'm glad you're all okay. Very lucky like MK said. Be thankful for that as things could have been awful. New stove and some paint and you're back in business.

Should have known it was a gas leak, that usually where stove fires come from. Thats why its always important to have a fire extinguisher on hand near the kitchen area. Good to hear you are okay though.

We need another one of those.

Unfortunately, we never replaced the last fire extinguisher. I had to use it over a year ago when my grandmother visited from the Dominican Republic.

She was cooking food and went to rinse the pot and all of a sudden the pot caught on fire while she was at the kitchen sink. The only thing I could guess is that grease spilled to the bottom of the pot and caught a flame from the stove as she moved it away.

So she starts screaming and well, it's my grandmother so if she screams I'm concerned. I rush over to find the pot on fire and she's panicking (must be a woman thing ) and I grabbed the extinguisher and didn't even think to tell her to step away and just doused that fire. Whole kitchen was covered in that stuff. Then I called my dad so he could speak to his mother and calm her down.

Another situation where I was lucky to be home because I remember that day pretty well and I had plans canceled a few hours before the fire started.

So if anyone here needs someone to solve a fire problem just give me a call.

edit: I forgot to add that the only reason that pot fire got so big is because my grandmother, for some absurd reason, decided that throwing a rag at the pot would stop the flames. Yea...

If you were a girl, I would marry you (unless you're fat). I was in English today and some kid was like "I want to see a tornado" and I told him to get his ho *** out of my class. Tornado scare the **** out of me.

Tornadoes, Spiders (and other assorted large bugs), and Fire are my triangle of fear.

I'm online minding my own business when I hear crackling coming from my kitchen. I go to investigate to find my stove on fire.

Really. The stove is on fire and it's not even on.

There's a nice little fire rising higher and higher and it's already burning through my wall.

So I rush to the bathroom and get a large bucket of water and dump the whole thing on my stove. Fire goes down but it won't let up. That fire is coming from inside the stove and something is triggering it.

I try telling my mom to call 911 and she's over here panicking. So I strip the phone from her hand and tell the operator to get me the Fire Dept. They come in about 5 minutes while I sit and watch the fire just do it's thing.

FDNY shuts down my gas and rips my stove away from the wall. The gas man comes about 30 minutes later to check it out and tells me that I had a gas leak inside the stove.

He keeps telling me that I'm lucky that the whole thing didn't just blow up.

So I'm alive and well.

That's my experience.

Nice that you're okay, but why did you just look at the fire? I would have been out of the house in a heartbeat.

I totally didn't understand the magnitude of the situation while it was happening. My only concern was keeping the fire low to prevent a larger fire. I never even considered an explosion.

Heck, I even took the time to step away and leave an away message so that people knew I'd be right back.

Yups...the fire might have saved your life. It burned off the gas that otherwise might have filled a room. If that would have gone off it would have been like a bomb. Nothing quite packs the punch of a gas explosion.

And my mom smokes in the kitchen by the window that is closest to the stove.

When the gas man came and talked about how we were lucky to not have the place blow up she said, "Oh my, and I smoke too."

The gas man simply responded by saying, "Ma'am, smoke would have been the least of your worries."
