    Working At A Pizza Place

I'm going to Papa John's tomorrow to apply for a job, and wanted to know if any other OSers had worked at a pizza joint before, whether in store or delivering pizzas.

Just kind of want to know what to expect before hand.

For those that delivered, was that all you had to do? Were you gone most of your shift delivering pizzas (obviously coming back to the store to pick up orders)? Make good tips? Any funny stories?

I worked at a Donatos once, although it was only for like two weeks until I quit. It was alright, I got to eat a lot of pizza but it sucked having to make sure every little thing was perfect.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I guess you couldn't eat while you were on the clock or anything like that?

Did you get free pizzas or discounted pizzas? How'd that work?

Well the manager I worked with always ate the pizza so he told us that we could eat as long as we stayed in the back, away from the cameras. We could make our own pizza for lunch for free too.

I delivered pizza for 5 years and usually worked the day shift, during the day there were not as many deliveries so I would help with the prep, making dough, sauce, cutting veggies etc. If you work night shift you will have more deliveries and be on the road more, Friday nights are by far the busiest nights and you can expect to be on the road constantly. You will have your share of people that will "stiff" you on tips and some that tip very genorously, after a while you will know the good deliveries from the bad deliveries. I got robbed once at gunpoint, I just gave up the pizza, 2 liter of coke and $20 and he was out, no hero here. The best delivery I ever took I got a $10 tip and the guy let me take a bong hit with him, his order was like $5. It was alot of fun and I made decent money, but would not want to do it with all the crazies running around these days.

Wow, robbed. ****, after an experience like that I don't know if I'd want to keep delivering.

LOL at the bong hit though. I know one of the guys in my speech class talked about how he delivered once to a swingers party. That cracked me up.

How does the tip work though? Does it go directly into your pocket, or do you put it in a pool and it's split with the other delivery guys?

If every porn movie I've ever seen is accurate, you should be getting laid about 20 times a night.

I delivered pizzas for papa johns a summer back. I worked night shifts and weekends are pretty busy, I would generally earn about 11 hr when you account in 6.25+tips-gas money. When you are in the store waiting for your orders to be up you are expected to answer the phones and place the orders, dishes, fold boxes, run the oven etc. The best perk was pretty much every shift they would cook up a large pizza for the crew and you can eat as you work, take it in the car with you or whatever. Good luck, its not a bad gig especially because you dont have someone on your back all day and you can jam to some tunes.

I kept my tips seperate from the money I collected for the pizza, so it went directly into my pocket. I also received commision based on a percentage of my total deliveries.

This is why I will never deliver food. There's a whole bunch of pizza places around me advertising $15 plus tips but I've heard of too many people getting robbed to risk it.

Sounds pretty good to me. I think delivering pizzas would be good, as you mentioned, because you're not really dealing with people and you're just driving. I love driving and gives me a chance to listen to music.

                            Where did you work?

And as far as safety, it's in a pretty nice party of town. Very low crime rate. I mean, that doesn't mean something couldn't happen, but as long as I feel safe then I'd take my chances.

I don't understand how this robbing works. So you knock on the door and they're waiting for you with a gun or something? How stupid do you have to be to rob a pizza delivery guy, considering that the delivery guy has the address and phone number to the house/apartment/whatever?
