    2012--The End of the World?

What do you guys think about this? I ask because I was on another site and they were discussing this, in relation to how everyone in 1999 thought the world was going to end.

Anyways, I just looked it up and there are so many theories it's not funny.

Still, such a theory originates from the Mayan Calendar. Hmmm, how the hell would an ancient civilization provide the date for the end of the world, as specific as 2012 is, when they didnt count their years according to the way we do today?

The only way I see any of these theories coming true is a result of an asteroid, but apparently NASA already has weapons that, ala Simpsons, are prepared to strike the comets to the nearest 10th of a centimeter.

I think the human race is fine. What do YOU think?

Well I don't think the world is going to end, but I disagree with that statement.

anything is possible, I will tell you this, IMO whole hearted opinion, I think the end is closer then we know it. I also think a I am Legend theory is very possible.

              Oh most definitely.

              Nuclear War
              Alien invasion
              Asteroid
              Yellowstone Super Volcano

One of those will occur this century. Book it.

I say all 4 at once.

Well get an Asteroid that causing the Yellowstone super volcano, while this is going on, Aliens will invade, causing one country to nuke another to try and stop the Aliens. That will then cause the country that is being invaded to launch nuclear weapons in response. Sounds good to me anyways.

But yes, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those happen.

I just don't see it happening. People went nuts over the Y2k "end of the world" nonsense, and look what happened. Nothing.

If anything, the world will end because people will go nuts because they "think" something is going to happen.

                    I just wikipedia'd 2012.

January 31 — 433 Eros, the second-largest Near Earth Object on record (size 13x13x33 km) is expected to pass Earth at 0.1790 astronomical units (~16.647 Million Miles). NASA studied Eros with the NEAR Shoemaker probe launched February 2000.[3]
If something happens in 2012 that will end the world, that is it. The Mayans were excellent astrologists, so I can see them predicting that to occur.

I think this could be possible but as far as the end of time any day is possible. And as far as the human race being fine. I highly disagree with that. If the world does end I think it will probably be due to nuclear war or a volcano.

That may be true, but I highly doubt they could have predicted 2000 year in the future. At least I hope they're wrong.

Re: 2012--The End of the World?

2012 has a lot of history behind it. 1999/2000 came about because of people's fascination with new milleniums and also the whole computer glitch thing.

Anyway, history has shown that the Earth has suffered several climate changes that have severely altered the landscape and life on Earth. The major one that wiped out the dinosaurs is still believed to have started from the hit of a large asteroid that created a cloud over the Earth's atmosphere that covered light and therefore created a chain by first wiping out plants.

Earth's rotation is very sensitive. Our planet is also extremely dedicated to working based on it's very extreme specific climate. Slight changes to Earth's rotation could create a change in climate that could prove devastating to the Earth's environment.

There are enough theories of asteroids heading towards Earth. Heck, even entire galaxies are on their way to the Milky Way galaxy for a great collision.

The Mayans were very accurate and if they saw something in 2012 then they're probably right on. Does this mean that our entire population will be wiped out in 2012? Probably not. But, I would believe it's very likely that the Mayans predicted the beginning of the end. It could still take millions upon million of years before those effects truly do anything.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Then how will we know if anything happened?

One theory I heard apparently has some life to it.

Supposedly, on December 21 of that year, the sun will rise, but will be blocked from Earth by a black hole in the middle of the Milky Way, which has been discovered and does exist. This will in turn cause huge problems (obviously). I have also heard something about this causing the poles to switch.
