    That's hilarious

I've actually been a bit fascinated with 12/21/2012 ever since I saw one of those shows about "end of the world" predictions back in 1999. One that was interesting was this guy somehow graphed all of the major events in human history with a timeline and the line drops to negative infinity on this date, then comes back up. The guy speculated that on this date it could be the end of the world or maybe the greatest event/turning-point in human history (i.e. human cloning, first contact, discovery of time travel, etc.) Since then I've learned about the whole Mayan calendar deal. Who knows what will happen. Cool to think about a first contact or time travel scenario though. Not cool to think about the end of the world.

I don't understand why so many people think that alien lifeforms probably don't exist. Why do people think that because certain planets are devoid of oxygen, water etc.. that lifeforms can't exist there? Why do potential alien lifeforms have to play by our rules and survive on the things we survive on? Just looking at our planet, the fact that organisms have been discovered in the depths of the sea, devoid of any light, and in extremely cold temperatures should show that not everything operates the way that we humans do.

Mankind is way too arrogant. The fact that most people don't think that alien lifeforms exist speaks to this. Because we haven't found any proof of them, they probably aren't out there? We can't travel .000001 inches in the grand scheme of the universe, but we KNOW that there can't be any other intelligent lifeforms out there?

FWIW, I think it would be amazing to be apart of the "end of the world". We all have to die sometime, why not go out in the most important event of the history of our world?

The end of the world for you is the day you die and leave this earth. Yes, we're all in that line. Doesn't have to be a massive disaster for you to leave here either.

Ponder on that one that the mayans forgot to tell you.

Does the history really matter if no one is here to reflect on or appreciate it?

            Been my question for years.

All I get in return is more scientific talk on how it's been proven that oxygen and nitrogen are necessities to the building blocks of life.

And I always counter with, "In our earth." But that's never understood.

Scientists have even gone as far to suggest that oxygen and nitrogen aren't exactly necessary. I've seen reports that have suggested that lifeforms could exist in Saturn which mainly consists of hydrogen and helium.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I dont understand why anybody would trust a Mayan calendar that was created hundreds of years ago!
We have progressed so much since the Mayans where around that I really dont think they could have predicted when the world would end.

Are you serious? There are things ancient civilizations were capable of doing and mastering that we still can't figure out today even with advanced technology.

We're not that advanced. We're only more advanced than we were back in the Dark Ages.

Just playing Devils Advocate here: We didn't know that ancient China had built water powered machines to mass produce grain, and pottery and all kinds of other crap until just a few years ago. What else don't we know that happened thousands of years ago?
