I agree with you 100%. We (full-timers in particular) need to realize that we spend more time with our co-workers than our family/friends. You gotta make the workplace fun or you'll go crazy. Even Bill Clinton had fun. Lol. My co-workers are the reason that I like to come to work most of the time. I know I have a job to do, but it's good to look at the schedule and see that a good friend is working. Even if they work in another department, it's all good. We're in it together.

Here are a few rules that I go by:

*Don't ask anything of someone that you couldn't/wouldn't do yourself.

*If you're able, always help someone that needs it. YOU WILL need help at some point.

*Make new/isolated workers feel comfortable. They will remember that. This helps if they ever come back and shoot up the place. Sounds silly, but ya never know.

*Stay busy. Chit-chat is fine as long as you're productive.

Not really. The best advice is to do your job properly. If you want to prevent your manager from talking trash about you, then complete your safety assessments and do not let them become delinquent. You are getting paid to perform a task. Do the task, else, find a different job. Nobody is forcing you to work for this manager. If you need this particular job for money, or some other reason, then do it right and suck it up.

I guarantee there is more to this story than described in the initial post. But both the manager and the employee, to me at least, are in the wrong in this situation. In situations where there are no winners, well, it usually gets ugly and personal.
