Worst two weeks in the stock market in 30 years?

I dont know how many here on OS own or trade stocks, but the past two weeks have been so horrible its unbelievable. I went from being plus 30% in my investments for the entire year or 07' to being down nearly 25% so far this year. Companies are opening in the morning under stop losses, its absolutely horrible.

Great Companies everywhere are getting slammed 20-30-40-50%. According to Cramer he says right now is the worst time in the past 30 years to be trading in the market.

That being said if you got cash on hand you will be able to make small fortunes as soon as this crap fest of a market turns around.

it's gonna get a lot worse before it gets better. I've heard anything from a bad recession to a worldwide economic depression that'll make 1929 look like child's play.

We do have many safeguards in place to prevent 1929 from happening again. One thing that is gonna get absolutely creamed is housing. I dont see how anyone out of college with a crap load of debt can buy a 300-400k house.

Yet, it happens all the time around me.

I think it'll be triggered by the Sub Prime lending problem not necessarily through the same means that created the Crash of '29.

People are stupid and fall for these no or little-money down loans. Look what it has gotten in them to now: foreclosures, debt, ect.

People aren't stupid for that. They're desperate and with the "little or no money" they have they see it as a way to achieve a dream that they wont otherwise be able to get. It all looks legal, they know some people who are in a house as they speak so they know it works.

The problem isn't with the money they put down it's that they buy (and get approved for) more than they can afford. Not sure where you live, but where I do there's very few first time home buyers that can save for a 20% down payment while paying rent, school loans, etc. It just isn't realistic.

Not really, Banks lost a ton of money because of the subprime mess. Because of that they have little capital to reinvest so things can grow.

Well I could write a thesis explaining how wrong you are in this statement. If you are not taking notice of how de-valued the dollar is becoming and direct foreign investment coming in and buying ownership stake on the cheap, then you will be blindsided by the truth over the next few years. The fed is basically at a point where its handcuffed. They can either release more funds into the market to spur on spending, or pull back funds to raise or at least keep the value steady. Pick your poison, rapid inflation or recession. Either way, its just another business cycle, we've seen them before and we'll see them again. But to say that there is no basis for what is driving the downturn is false.

In that case, I'd advise everyone to invest in two things that will never be valueless, gold and heroin.
