    Re: Frats

I have a mixed feeling on them... yes, I was in one while I was in school.. I must say, the guys in the frat during my time there were a good group of people.. we did more than "drink beer and party" -- sure we had our fill, but we also did a lot more than that -- Halloween Parties for kids, helping out at the Special Olympics, etc.. Yes, there are some of the "Animal House" types out there, but not all frats are bad..

That being said, the year after I left, the "new guys" in the frat got hooked on some "not so pleasant things" and almost single-handedly wiped my frat off the school map..

When I went to Auburn for my freshman year I didn't know anyone, so joining a fraternity was an easy decision for me. I met some terrific guys who are my best friends now. If I had to go back I would do it all over again.

That's my experience...I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm flying to 2 weddings and a bachelor's party this year, all for friends in the fraternity.

That being said, i also joined a fraternity (I hate the term 'frat', I usually associate that with the asshat houses) that was a little "different". They didn't haze, they were a lot like I was, a lot of guys in the Engineering school. Somewhere I fit in. It was great, we all played every IM sport, my best friends to live with, etc.

I'd never ever ever join some of the other houses I've seen though. They beat people and do messed up ish, and truly aren't worth it.

For those that go "I don't pay money for friends", I think you're referring to sororities. For me, the fraternity was only 300 a semester, and a lot of that ended up just paying for my IM sports admission. Plus my rent was way cheaper than I'd pay anywhere else on campus. I do know that sororities are pretty damn expensive, and I have a somewhat differing opinion on those (more bad than good hearing from female friends who were in them).

A fraternity may not be for you, but it's at least something to consider, especially if you're at a really big school. Smaller schools I'd tend to think they're not really necessary. I'm the type of person who can make "acquaintances" easily, but true friends I can trust aren't that easy. This helped me out, but if you're one of those people who can walk into a room and come out with 30 friends for life then you obviously wouldn't need it.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to make that correction. I have never been able to understand why the word "frat" is so hated by so many fraternity members, can you shed any light on it? The standard response I usually get is "because we're a fraternity, not a frat", which isn't a very good explaination in my book.

My guess, without any knowledge is that the shortened word "frat" carries kind of a negative conotation of a bunch of guys that just sit around drink and drink and accomplish nothing. A fraternity is supposed to be a brotherhood and I think they have some kind of platform (charity) that they support and they're supposed to do good things in the community.

I guess I'll just check them out when I'm there. I'm not all for hazing and that crap, I think it's stupid. But I'll give it a chance and see how they are, I guess I just kind of see Frats as just a bunch of white guys partying, and one of the reasons I'm going to Temple is the diversity in the student body. I don't want just be surrounded by the type of kids I am in high school. But I'll wait and see how they are.
