Last night I went into our ferrets' room to get one of them for his medicine. They were sleeping under an old entertainment center that is their sleeping cupboard. For some reason none of them would come out even though I was shaking treats for them. So I had to go and lift up the entertainment center to get the one I needed. As I reached to grab Kal-El I brushed up against Gus-Gus and realized he was ice cold and not moving. So I picked him up and he was dead. In all the years I've had animals this is the first time I've ever found one dead.
We never saw this coming. When Bartleby died he was put to sleep and we knew the end was near. But with Gus-Gus we had just taken him to the vet's last week when we were worried he was sick. Our vet assured us that he was fine and he had started to put some weight back on. He seemed fine on Thursday, but then last night he was just dead.
Sadly he was my wife's favorite ferret. He was the most loving animal one could imagine. He was always happy and just loved life and now he's just gone. We don't have children yet, so our animals are pretty much our children right now. To make matters worse we have his litter mate Zeek. The bond between these two animals is akin to the dogs in Where the Red Fern Grows so now we are worried that Zeek will die of a broken heart, which is rather common for ferrets.
Here is a picture of him playing from a couple years ago

R.I.P. Gus-Gus.
