The most traumatic thing happened to me last night.........

I am still in a state of shock over this so sorry if this is incoherent.

Last night I went into our ferrets' room to get one of them for his medicine. They were sleeping under an old entertainment center that is their sleeping cupboard. For some reason none of them would come out even though I was shaking treats for them. So I had to go and lift up the entertainment center to get the one I needed. As I reached to grab Kal-El I brushed up against Gus-Gus and realized he was ice cold and not moving. So I picked him up and he was dead. In all the years I've had animals this is the first time I've ever found one dead.

We never saw this coming. When Bartleby died he was put to sleep and we knew the end was near. But with Gus-Gus we had just taken him to the vet's last week when we were worried he was sick. Our vet assured us that he was fine and he had started to put some weight back on. He seemed fine on Thursday, but then last night he was just dead.

Sadly he was my wife's favorite ferret. He was the most loving animal one could imagine. He was always happy and just loved life and now he's just gone. We don't have children yet, so our animals are pretty much our children right now. To make matters worse we have his litter mate Zeek. The bond between these two animals is akin to the dogs in Where the Red Fern Grows so now we are worried that Zeek will die of a broken heart, which is rather common for ferrets.

Here is a picture of him playing from a couple years ago

Man that sucks, losing a pet is always hard. One day I came home from school to notice my frog was upsidown (sp?) and he died that way. I guess he jumped and hit a rock and couldnt get up.

    Sorry for the lose man

I saw that pic before I read your post and thought with the title of your post someone sent you a package and when you opened it that was in it, but I was wrong.

RIP to Gus-Gus. Ferrets wouldn't be the animal that I would choose for a pet but I understand your loss.

Sorry to read about this, man.

I don't want to start a conspiracy deal (yes I do) but man, I'd check out what that vet really did.

Over a year ago, my mother got a little puppy and we noticed that it started getting sick after a few days. So we sent it to the vet and the vet said a lot of what yours said to you. Gave the dog a few shots, blah blah blah.

The next morning, the dog is frozen dead on it's bed.

A part of me feels like it just wasn't healthy to begin with but sometimes I wonder if the vet accidentally did something.

I guess I just bring it up because your story reminded me of the puppy.

And, damn, why'd you have to bring up Where The Red Fern Grows? I loved that book and I hope Zeek will be alright.

Do you think Kal-El will be fine?

We trust our vet and I couldn't imagine he would do something wrong. The thought crossed my mind, but we need to chalk it up as just one of things that unfortunately happens. Perhaps he just didn't look for the right illness, but in this area there are only a couple of vets who even treat ferrets, and ours as by far the best reputation.

As for Kal-El, he has an incurable disease. Zeek and Kobe actually do too. They get medicine every day. It is what it is, the surgery is too expensive for the limited benefit the animal receives.

Damn, I bet you love those guys like crazy. It's great that you care for them that way. Some people might actually just let their pets go in that situation rather then keep giving them medicine.

Yeah it tears us up we can't have the surgery done for them, but it's just too expensive right now. Kobe had it, but within 6 months the same problem came back. He only gets medicine once a day, whereas Zeek and Kal-El who haven't had the surgery get it twice a day.

We also had Quincy who had the surgery twice, but then died anyway. He was the one who died of a Vet's malpractice (different vet). Unfortunately in Massachusetts you can only get the cost of the animal and it is just as difficult for the Division of Professional Licensure to take any action against a vet.
