The 290/33 is the wind direction and the speed. 290 is heading 290, which means the wind was blowing from 290°, so basically from West to East. The 33, is the speed of that wind, which is 33 knots. The gusts portion of it was the "to 49" part. The wind was blowing from heading 290° at 33 knots, with gusts to 49 knots.

Any other questions just ask, aviation is a little hobby of mine.

How much is 49 knots, in miles per hour?

Assuming I'm remembering correctly and it's ~1.15 mph to every knot, that'd be around 55-56mph I believe. Since the news reported 155 mph wind, I'm guessing they just put a 1 in front of it on accident.

Makes sense. I knew the 155mph quote was wrong. No pilot would ever try to land with winds reaching that amount.

50 knots is 57.6 mph (from the chart above).

So say the gust was at 155mph, that would mean the sustained wind would have to be upwards of 80mph. So if the sustained winds were already around 80mph, why would you try landing?

I don't know the speed in which wind become a problem for landing an airplane, but I'm thinking 50+ mph makes it difficult. So if sustained wind is upwards of 80mph, I think you'd have some problems.

So I think the pilot should take some blame, if he tried to land with sustained winds reaching nearly 80mph.
Again, where do you suggest that he should've gone?

LMAO at JMood, and Double Eight. You guys are silly.

Anyway, in these weather conditions the best thing to have done is NOT land the airplane. Evidently it was the only option for the plane. Why? Who knows? Since none of us was on the scene suggesting a reason is pure speculation.

All of that being said the plane was cleared to land, and the pilot did one hell of a job saving the plane. The people directing, and flying these planes are professionals. I'm not going to question them. They had their reasons for why the landing was attempted.

One hell of save job from the pilot.

Slightly off topic, but here is a picture of a brand new 777 doing a buzz by the tower, well actually over the runway at Everett WA.

Oh yeah, the plane had VIP's on board, was not approved, and loaded with jet fuel to fly to Hong Kong. Wow!

And the pilot got fired after this stunt.

Link above, there is a very short youtube video of the fly by.

Link above has a longer video of the fly by.

Hopefully that pilot is brought up on some sort of charges.

If I were a passenger, I would sue the **** out him and the airline.

I love watching the 747's take off, they use every inch of the runway.
