Death Toll of US Soldiers in Iraq over 4000

I just want to start off by asking that this not turn into a political discussion. I realize that's not accepted here. However, I do think these guys' sacrifices (regardless of what you think about the political situation) should at least be recognized here.

    Here is the story.

Things like this tend to have very little effect on some of us because it's so far away. It's not at our doorstep, so it's far from our minds. But when I saw this story this morning, I don't know if it's because I was military or what, I immediately teared up. These are men and women who are not too different than us. They like watching the same shows on tv as we do. They like video games. They are parents, children, brothers, sisters and friends. They are indeed, real people.

Again I am asking that this not turn into a political debate. I'm not trying to make everyone depressed either. I'd just like for you to take some time out and think about these people who are risking their lives and dying for this country and maybe send out a prayer for them and their families.
    PS: You guys are great.

Even one life has a great impact, let alone 4,000. I thank everyone involved for the freedoms and safety we have today because of their sacrifices.

Good post tr, and I agree, lets not turn this into a political discussion.

Know what's scary? This war we've lost 4000, and we're flipping about it (as we should, I thank the soldiers very much), but WWII the death total was around 50 MILLION! I mean, think about that. Imagine if we'd lost even a million.

        50 million?

Try closer to 420,000. It's still an astronomical number but let's not kill off a third of our population in one war.

I think he was talking the war as a whole (other countries).

No matter how you feel about the war everyone should, and I believe 99.9% do, have the utmost respect for our soldiers. With most of us being so far removed from the situation it's sometimes forgotten that there are men and women from this country serving in harm's way.

yeah we lost 420,000 and won. thats crazy. regarding our lost number for this war i wish it would be possible to get enemy/insurgent numbers lost but its prob impossible since noone will take sccountability for those guys cause they are insurgents.

Yeah, I have the utmost respect to our soldiers, but things have been much, much worse in the past. I don't mean to downplay the deaths in teh Iraq War, I just think we overblow some of this stuff a bit, especially when in the Civil War, we had 4,000 deaths every 6 days. Let's take a look at the United States' casualties in some other wars:

                Vietnam
                Deaths: 58,209
                Missing: 2,000
                Wounded: 305,000
                26 deaths per day

Re: Death Toll of US Soldiers in Iraq over 4000

For not meaning to downplay the deaths of our current service men and women, you did a great job of downplaying their deaths. One by implying that recognizing their efforts is overblowing things and two by listing and comparing stats. So a few thousand more of them need to die so they can be held in the same regard as people from previous conflicts? Was there really a need to do that?

That said, I do not regard the deaths of people in any conflict lightly, which is why I feel there is no need to compare how many died in such and such war to this one. That's not the point of this thread at all. I can't help but feel offended by the stat guy(s).
                  PS: You guys are great.

not only is spinning the deaths of this iraq war to look not as bad as previous wars laughable, it's a sad point of view to have. This war was supposed to be done in months. We're far and beyond the technological power. The only reason why there's "only" 4k deaths is because we're bogged down without a clear goal or enemy. Mismanagement and political BS has kept this war going the wrong way for so long. It's not really as rosy as saying it's only 4k soldiers dead when the civil war or vietnam was worse.

You, sir, have no idea what you're talking about and successfully derailed this thread to a direction previously warned not to go.

                      Nice job.
