Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

I think the Constitution spells it out pretty clearly, but I think the lawyer (Massnole, Esquire) expressed my opinion far more eloquently than I ever could

Good thread (for the most part).

I try to avoid topics like this because if you are anything pro Christ (especially on the internet) its like a up hill battle.

I know a thread like this is lasting longer than I would have guessed, being this is pretty much a religious thread.

Just a question that might be a little off-topic but somewhere in the ballpark.

Do kids still say the "Pledge of Allegiance" at school?

The only parts that i can remember are "I pledge allegiance, to the flag.......Under god, one nation, indivisible"....

Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

This thread made it longer than I thought it would!

I am a huge fan of people being allowed to celebrate/ honor their beliefs however they see fit. The biggest problem I have is when other groups do complain about the nativity scenes or the " pledge of allegiance( many other examples ) If I lived in a country where my beliefs were not the majority, I would not expect that country to to conform to my ideas or ideals and I feel way too many people actually feel like this country should. I just don't understand the assumption from people who feel their rights are being violated by certain things we do/ celebrate in this country.

It's not meant as disrespectful, it's just standing tradition that our generation, and the many other generations were brought up on.I think our country does a good job of conveying the allowance of religious freedom and I actually feel we are probably a little too flexible on a National level( not individual).

Anyways, good discussion, it's nice to see a mature conversation where people do not feel the need to belittle other people for their choices and beliefs. This is not the easiest thing to allow and/or accomplish in a forum setting.

The only thing about "Under God" in the Pledge is that it hasn't always been there. It wasn't added until 1954. I agree that it's not meant to be disrespectful but I'm also not sure if something that was added to the Pledge 60+ years after it was written falls under tradition.

Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

I don't think that we really have or should have a sort of affiliation to where things are closed all day for a purely religious holiday (Easter, Christmas...I guess). I am a catholic i guess, I don't really practice, as I have some problems with some of the finer theological points, which I won't get into. I don't really have a problem with the Pledge of Allegiance, but I don't get the difficulty with just removing the "under god", especially if it was just added in the 50s.

I really get bugged when people complain about nativity scenes on church property, or a person who puts one up in their yard. Unless they are putting something telling somebody to go kill somebody else, I don't see the problem. I wouldn't have a problem with a scene from any other religion (as long as it wasn't encouraging any sort of illegal activity, such as killing) being in the yards either.

I am pretty darn sure the US's official religion is Christianity, though that is obviously not forced upon people.

Re: Question About Out Nation re: Affiliation

                      There is no "national religion."

Yes, our Founding Fathers were of Christian faith, but they clearly stated that every citizen of this country had the right to choose what religion (if any) he or she wanted to follow.

                        Completely agree on all points.

How does JC Penny shutting down on Easter have anything to do with national religion or federal holidays? It's a private company and can choose whether or not it wants to be open. Federal holidays only affect the closing of government and government run functions. Unless you are upset that you can't go to the DMV or get mail on Christmas, Christmas being a national holiday shouldn't affect you.
