    Re: OS Off Topic

    Dude, I experienced (roughly) the same thing so I feel your pain.

    Grades weren't the issue, but the college was. I wanted to go to Iowa State and my parents were dead-set on sending me to UNI. At the end of the day, they refused to help me with ANYTHING related to Iowa State - I even caught them throwing out some mail addressed to me from ISU.

    Needless to say, I was pissed. So what did I do? When I turned 18 I realized I could make it happen for myself. I did whatever it took to get me to Iowa State. And then I had a rough patch with my parents for a while. But after a semester, they saw how happy I was in Ames and they apologized to me for their behavior. I'm not sure if that will happen in your case, but it seems to me like this is a person that you don't need or maybe even want in your life.

    If money is the issue, there's FAFSA, student loans, and there's always working your way through college. If you're a driven hard-worker who's willing to do whatever it takes, you will always be able to pay the bills. If the major issue is your stepmom's signature on the loan, sit her down and make it clear that you're willing to have one last conversation with her, and tell her that you ARE going to BGSU, and it's up to her if she wants to sign off on it or not.

    And **** your counselor. He doesn't know jack****. That's why he's a high school counselor. Use that as motivation to own your own life. You really can do whatever you want to do.

        I've got a test in microbiology tomorrow and am looking forward to it. I'm seriously thinking about switching my major from nursing to microbiology.

          (No offense to actual high school counselors. I'm sure it can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. It just seems to me that this one in particular is not suited for the job whatsoever.)

            Speaking of High School counselors, I had a terrible one at the school that I graduated from. First of all she didn't know anything about anything and was absolutely no help to anyone then once she was able to retire she just left a couple months before school ended without telling anyone what was happening. So my senior year of high school we had a new counselor that had to come in not knowing who anyone was since she left so fast without saying anything. I was lucky that I had all my stuff done with.

              I never even see our high school counselor, but apparently all she ever does is inform you your grades are bad. She is also really creepy.

                It's just the timing of all these excuses that's really shady. It conveniently comes RIGHT AFTER we visit BGSU, and all she did there was complain, and any time that a trash can was in order or an empty store was spotted, she said the town was trash. We went to this mall that was, IMO, the worst mall I've ever been to. It was small, empty, and the only good store was Steve & Barry's. These are some of the quotes she gave me:

                "This is a really bad area"
                "I wouldn't come here at night by myself"
                "This place isn't impressing me"

                We have a mall here that's almost the exact same thing. It's empty all the time, there's pretty much no good stores, and it's small. But THIS area was bad, alright.

                I've been interested in BGSU since October and have told her this, and I guarantee you I told her how much it cost back then at least one time. There's no way she could have been THAT irresponsible and never got around to checking.

                I just feel robbed of my future, pretty much. You let me apply, get accepted, tell me that it's alright to go there, send in the deposit, talk about what meal plan I wanted, take me all the way the hell out there, and all of a sudden you can't afford it? I'm not stupid, and why would you put your son through that? And if she really didn't look at how much it cost, how could you be so irresponsible? Just because it's not all about you doesn't mean you can just let things go like that.

                Whatever...I'm leaving tomorrow for god knows how long, I need to get away from her.

                  All I'm gonna say, man, is that you can pay for it. You may not want to, but sometimes you can't have it both ways. At the end of the day it is her money and she can pay for what she wants. It may suck, but if you really want to go to Bowling Green, you'll be able to pay for it if you're willing to work hard enough.

                          I was planning on doing that, but I need a co-signer to get the loans..and I have nobody. According to CollegeBoard, these are PSU and BG's average numbers:

                          BGSU

                          * Average percent of need met: 77%
                          * Average financial aid package: $11,674
                          * Average need-based loan: $5,747
                          * Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $6,837
                          * Average non-need based aid: $5,207
                          * Average indebtedness at graduation: $24,075

                          PSU

                          * Average percent of need met: 65%
                          * Average financial aid package: $7,558
                          * Average need-based loan: $2,737
                          * Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $5,815
                          * Average non-need based aid: $3,311
                          * Average indebtedness at graduation: $26,300

                          But she can "afford" PSU. This is shady, this is ridiculous, and I can't take it anymore. My mom sent my gram in here today to talk to me, and after I showed her that, even she had a hard time defending what my mom was doing. I can't sleep right now, this whole thing is literally making me sick to my stomach. The fact that I'm likely going to have to get a full-time job right after I graduate is just horrible to think about. We can't even have a rational conversation...whenever I try to make a point, she yells, which in turn pisses me off, and I start yelling back. There's no getting through. I've tried everything. I wish I could just pack my things and leave now, to be honest with you. I feel like her damn puppet, that she can just do whatever she wants with whether I like it or not. I need help in the worst way.

                              Because I didn't have the grades to get in...plus I'm sure the deadline to apply has passed...Basically my plan was that if I actually didn't like BG as much as I thought, I was going to transfer to PSU after my first year.
