Yep it pretty much is a lot like Pittsburgh. The people in Hamilton even have the same kind of lunch pail mentality to them too. Something interesting I learned the other day though is that Hamilton is the sister city of Sarasota, Florida.

You can tell the accent when you here canadian celebs talk. alanis morrisette, michael myers, 99% of the NHL.

Canada gave the world Kids in the Hall, it also gave us Celine Dion. So its a push as to whether Canada is good or not.

I prefer European (British, Irish, Scottish, etc..) English; It sounds more elegant.

American English is just awful. "Howdy yall"

Yeah, but that's just a certain region of our country. To me the northern midwest (Minnie-SOTA) or a thick Boston accent are the worst. I think the standard English spoken in the mainstream media is fine.

The British have a ton of different accents as well (i.e. Scouse, Yorkshire, SouthWest English, etc.) and some of those are extremely nasty and hard to understand.

Canadian accents are also a regional thing like in the U.S.. Generally you'll find the most neutral accents (non-accents) in Southern Ontario and urban British Columbia The English speaking population in Quebec, are close to being neutral but they tend to slightly over-pronounce their A's, although most regional accents are less prevalent in all urban areas in Canada. The prairies and Western Canada tend to have a more distinguishable accent, where the shortening of certain vowels is noticeable, like in the "ou" couple. The east coast also has a unique accent, and out of all the provinces Newfoundland probably has the most distinct accent, as demonstrated below.

British English is awesome (at least the kind you hear on tv, not the thick cockney accent which can be really thick in London).

Thanks for the answer and the vid, it was quite a lecture and made me a bit confused, but it was the best comment. I might visit Winnipeg this summer so I wanted to know about all those differences betwen Candian and American English. Now I'll try to figure out where Winnipeg falls. I suppose it belongs to western Canada...?

What is this metric system you speak of? Some sort of fad diet?

Bah....they tried to push that crap on us 30 years ago....In true American fashion we dismissed it as the nonsense that it is and continued on.:wink A friggin' yard is a yard... not .XXX meters!)
                          I will not conform!

...and don't they speak Eskimo up in Canada? I don't think they speak English, do they?....it doesn't matter anyway...because as soon as the words come out of their mouths, they freeze up and nobody can hear it.

One thing they can take solace in up in the land of Moose and earmuffs.....with the advent of global warming, Canada will sport the worlds new "Miami Beach"!

I'd be fine moving to the metric system. Just keep our steering wheels on the left side.

BTW I know Canada has a football league (CFL). Does any1 know if they measure distance in meters or yards?
