I also recommend that you sign up for one of the credit watching companies to keep track where you stand with creditors.

100 K left on mortgage for home
80 K left on mortgage for beach condo
15 K left on wife's student loan. ( Phd. so not that bad and interest rate is 1.2 % )

That being said, I am not really trying to pay my mortgages down. I have a feeling there is another collapse coming so I am just stashing away all my extra cash.

My girlfriend has over $40,000 in student loans and I make more than she does and I never went to college. She is a special needs teacher and has been out of school for over 3 years and I have been at my job for 14 years with no degree.

I see a lot of people go to school and than unable to find a job in that field. Kinda sad actually.
That is just reality for many........My sister makes a hell of a lot of money with no degree. Hell I know a lot of people who are working at places that is out of their field.

Degrees don't hold much weight anymore. Nowadays EXPERIENCE trumps a degree. Not saying don't get a degree, just saying having a degree isn't an automatic big money maker like it use to be 15 years ago.

People with bachelor degrees are a dime a dozen nowadays. Got to have that experience to stand out from the pack.

I agree about that experience. I didn't have it and had to go way off my radar to get a job!

Yep, the only reason I'm being considered for the job I applied for, is because my best friend of 17 years has a dad who works for the company in Columbia, South America. He was able to get my friend on and he's doing the same for me. Otherwise, no one wants to hire someone un experienced and start out by paying them $26/hr. (especially at my age ... 22)

                $0...

                For now...

But I'm still in college. Thank God my parents saved up money all these years (and I'm an only-child) so I didn't have to fork out thousands of dollars of student loans to go to college. I was quite fortunate in that regard. I hope to be able to do the same for my kids.

One of the biggest problems with the country today is that "everybody needs to go to college", which is BS. There are so many people that get degrees in Political Science or English or Ethnic Studies and then complain about not being able to find a job. What did you think was going to happen?
Go to college if you want a job in something that REQUIRES a degree....like engineering. If you're going just to go you're wasting your time and money.

Re: How much are you in debt?

Just completely paid off 3 credit cards.

I have another one left, it has about $1400 on it.

I am thinking of opening up a new card with 0% on balance transfer for a year or so, and paying it off, good idea?

I'm in way too much debt. Over $100k between college and grad school. Nearly 2k in credit card debt, but some of that is from my mom using it for Xmas this past year. Then I have probably a couple thousand left on my car which will be paid off in August. I'm way behind the 8 ball here lol.

Just made a $4k payment on our car today! Hopefully we can pay this off by August. That would mean we paid off a $25k automobile in one year! I am pretty happy about that.

                          Next up, student loans.
