Re: Sad news for me
I know it's tough to find a "bright side" to something something like this...but if you look hard enough, you'll find it. Your dad may not feel this way now but I'm sure a sense of relief will consume him as he realizes he no longer has to worry about taking care of his sick father. When I lost my dad to cancer, our whole family went through the same thing. Yeah, it sucked that our dad was no longer with us but he wasn't suffering anymore and the weight of having to care for him on a 24 hour basis (health insurance companies suck) was gone.
Best wishes to you and your family.
Taking care of anybody, let alone a parent, with Alzheimer's is as draining a task as there is on this planet. Most people that care for these patients don't have anybody to talk to about it, and that puts a lot of stress on the caretaker. I'm sure your dad has done a great job taking care of your grandpa but it takes its toll. The worst thing is that, regardless of what you do, the fight against Alzheimer's is a losing one. Alzheimers personally for me is the hardest disease to deal with- one of my great-uncles had it and he was reduced to nothingness from being one of the most articulate and intelligent men I knew.
In the long run, your grandfather will be in a better place. It may not seem so at first, but your dad will get better as well. In many ways, knowing that a loved one isn't battling the disease is a comforting feeling.
