Major chain restaurants make money hand over fist, the price increase you cite would be to accommodate their corporate greed not to offset the cost of their increased wages. They have gotten away with it for so long that they have brainwashed people to actually believe what you just said about the cost increase. They know by and large that we are nothing but mindless lemmings who will never challenge the status quo, and those of who do will be labeled malcontents who can't appreciate the difficulty of the job.

I fully appreciate that I have to tip when I go to a restaurant, but really lets be realistic here, it is me further covering the expenses of a large corporation that could more readily afford to pay their employees if they chose to. They chose not to and get the government to subsidize their business by passing laws that make it legal for them to pay less than minimum wage. This isn;t about the 'poor' server, this is about corporate greed and economic protectionism of corporations and nothing else, plain and simple.

Corportate greed, stock holders, investors, what ever you want to call it. But I'm sure if you were investing in a company and all of sudden their profits took a nice 10% dive because they had to triple their salaries, you wouldn't be too happy about that as you can all but guarantee you stocks would plunge on just the announcement of this.

No offense, but don't lawyers charge hundred(s) of dollars per hour for their services? I'm guessing part of this is simply because they have gotten away with it for years as well? I'm not knocking you at all on this, I know you worked hard, but I think the shoe fits here. Different industy, different service, different level of education, but who's to say the price is fair or unfair?

BTW, Brinker Intl. The parent company of Chili's, Macaroni Grill, On the Border, etc. showed a (4.3%) loss in Q1 of 2008. They lost money. Definitely not making it hand over fist.

The middle class restaurant industy is usually one of the hardest hit industries during economic slow downs as most families that are cutting back, stop going out to eat either all together or at least less frequently.

Why should I be punished, by having to pay extra, because you chose a job that was difficult and payed less than you needed?

You keep saying this... no one is forcing you to tip. If you want to be a cheap bastard that's on you.

You tip someone because you appreciate the fact that they are servicing you. This goes back a long way... ever had your shoes shined? You can do it yourself, right? But no, someone is doing it for you... and you show your appreciation by tipping them.

That's the concept. Very simple and doesn't require a PhD to understand. It's your choice to do whatever you want. Just know that the next time you come in for service, don't expect it to be as "enjoyable."

I'm sure we have all had really exceptional service. Usually average, sometimes bad, and sometimes great. Do you think you would have received the good and great service if the server knew that all he was getting was his base wage of $6,$7 or $8 an hour regardless of the quality of job he performed?

You also have to realize that whether it's greed or whatever, if they raise salaries, food prices will rise as well and customers will complain more than they do about tipping. I'd much rather give my extra $5 to the kid in high school than to the bottom line of the company.

Of course there are perks for all parties. The company pays lower wages and burden. The employee makes more than they would at a flat wage. The customer gets better service because they know that they will likely receive a tip for doing a good job. And the customer doesn't have to tip if they don't want to. They can walk away from the meal without paying a cent more than for what they consumed.

It's the same thing with shopping. You go to a typical store like J Crew or Banana Republic or wherever,where the employees don't make commission and you may get a Hi, can I help you? And that is it. You to to a place like The Men's Wearhouse where they make a commission and you get great service. They may try and sell you on something (but it's up to you to buy) but they will measure you, pick out coordinating outfits, reccomend alterations if they are needed, etc.

The bottom line is that the incentive of something extra for the employee providing the service helps ensure and motivate good service. Otherwise you get the minimum and then likely most people complain.

I tip based on service. Very rarely have I not left a tip at all. If a waiter or waitress is fairly new (you can tell), if they put fourth the effort and were friendly I will tip them well. Being a waiter or waitress part of your job is being friendly and upbeat with the customers. If you are having a bad day that is not the customers fault. I have had servers who had attitude problems and I did not give them a hard time or was a difficult customer.

Very simple

Good service = good tip
Bad service = bad tip
Bad service and an attitude = no tip

You never answered if you tip your barber. YP, you can answer that as well.

I don't go to the barber Pared, I get a one cut and just shave my hair off every two weeks with my own buzzer thing. Now when I used to have a barber a couple years back in high school, I used to get those trendy cuts. Meaning the cutter had to really take his time to make sure every hair was perfect. I definitely tipped him since he always did a superb job.

No I agree with everything, I think I came off wrong with how I worded some of my early posts. I tip based off performance, which means that in the end, the server may not get a tip at all. With that said, I'm still against tipping, I think it's ridiculous. Like I said, I would be willing to do everything they do for myself. Most of the time I eat out, all the server freaking has to do is fill my cup once or twice, and bring out the plate of food. Does that deserve a tip?! IMO no. Now if my table was making the server do all sorts of different things, then of course yeah they deserve a little extra. The fact that my home state pays the workers minimum wage.. that gives me the green light to tip badly or not tip at all.

This is why I love going to Fuddruckers. Do any of you have those chains around you? It's a family style eatery similar to a Chilis or TGIF's.. except you get your own drinks, your own sauces, salads etc. You even get your plate of food once it's ready from the main counter. The food is EXACTLY like Chilis or TGIF, just you get up and do your own grunt work. No tip needed. That's the way it should be.

There is a fuddruckers near me... I'll have to give it a shot. To be honest though... places like that just seem cheap to me. Almost like the Chinese Buffets.

Well do you think Chilis and TGIF are "cheap"? Basically they're equivalent. Nothing special really, just good ole American style eating.

Like I said, most of the time where I eat out and have the oppurtunity to tip, the server hardly has to do ish for my table. Fill up our drinks once or twice, and simply bring our plates of food out [which usually bus boys or other people, not the server bring out]. Yeah it's what like 4-5 bucks, but damn did they really deserve that?! If we're making the server work, constantly making him/her go to and from the kitchen etc., then I see no problems with leaving the tip. I just wish we could have the option of serving ourselves.

I actually don't like Chilis or TGIF. Used to like Applebees until they raised their prices but not the quality of their food.

The only chain restaurants I still like similar to those are Houlihan's and The Olive Garden.
