Spend an extra 10 minutes with your pet tonight

My four legged buddy, Snickers, finally left me May 10, 2008. I keep thinking if only I hadn't watched tv or done this or that one night, I could have spent a little more time with him somehow. I know that's silly, he's just a dog, he lived a long almost 14 year life, he had as good a life as a dog could expect, any pain he undoubtedly felt is now over, and I know those things will help me to move on over the coming days, but those things don't stop me from missing my 4 legged best bud of 14 years right now.

The end for him has been right around the corner for the past year or so but he still managed an enjoyable life up until the end. He developed an enlarged heart and had fluid build up so he took pills to reduce the fluid, but those pills also overstressed his kidneys. He's been going strong after a scare back in February and it seemed like he might make it another 6-12 months.

Last Thursday/Friday he stopped eating and began shaking. We went to the vet on Saturday expecting he wasn't coming back but yet still hoping. His kidneys had finally begun to shut down, his time had finally come.

Despite trying to prepare myself for this moment for what seems like years now, the pain of losing him still is rough.

How dare you disturb my rest?

    Waiting is the hardest part.

So to all you animal lovers with 4 legged pals, remember their time with you will almost always end well before you want it to, spend some extra time giving them some attention tonight.

I'll miss you Snickers, goodbye buddy.

It almost seems like sometimes the biggest reason I like to visit home from college is just to see my guinea pig. I miss her every day of my life when I'm here.

Thanks for the heartfelt story. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss but at least you spent some long years with him and he went because of old age.

      Really good pictures BTW.

Wow he was a cute doggie

I'm sorry to hear about your loss but as others have said at least he lived a long and full life. The memories of him will live on forever i'm sure.

Sorry for your loss. 14 years is a long time...it looks like he had the best life possible.

Thanks guys. He did have a long and enjoyable life and that is the main thing that keeps me from being too sad.

              Sorry to hear that MudTiger....

I know when my girl goes...it's going to be devastating for me. I almost always have her with me except when I'm at work. When people see me without her it surprises them!

MudTiger, sorry to hear about your loss man. But from what I can tell, he had one hell of a good life, and was loved and cared for.

Don't beat yourself up over what I could've/should've done. Remember the good times. Remember the good times.

I'm really sorry to hear that, I know exactly how you feel. Losing a pet is one of the hardest things someone can experience. I dread the day my cat passes.

I lost my dog last July when she got loose and was hit by a car. In my twenty years of life, that was the absolute worst day of my life. My dad brought her home when I was five, and I basically grew up with her. She was 13 years old, nearing 14, and like you, I tormented myself by telling myself I could have spent more time with her.

The pain will ease, but it won't ever go away. All you can do is remember the good times.

Sorry to hear that Man If you are any kind of human this is very tough. I think putting my dog down and being in the room when she took her last breath was the hardest thing I had to deal with in my life.. People told me she had a good life but she was truly my best friend. When I got ripped out of Highschool and moved to florida, That was a very hard transition leaving my friends I grew up with. Sadie was by my side through it all...I still think of her from time to time and it's still hard....We made a nice headstone with her name and dates...When you have a bad day and go home she would be right there as happy as can be... Sorry for your loss man!!!

Man I don't think I could have seen the last breath thing. I don't have any pets (wasn't allowed growing up, my dad got attacked by dogs as a kid and my sister messed up with smaller pets), but I know I will be getting a dog when I am all done with college and move out on my own. I can remember when a friend had to have his dog put down, that was really sad.

I know exactly how you feel bro. Losing a pet was one of the hardest things to get over with for me. My golden lab got put down because she had a humongous tumor in her right ankle and she could only walk on 3 legs. I remember just saying my last words to her in the vets office before the vet took her to the back.

Aw man, that's sad but it's also kind of uplifting knowing that he had such a good life. My cat was here by my side reading along with me.

I still remember the day I said goodbye to one of my dogs. He was a German Sheppard and had been a stray for a longggg time before we took him in. We taught him to be a dog, not a stray. He had never had treats, been groomed, got a treat, nothing. But we had him for a year and then he got sick over and over again. Eventually it was time to put him down and I remember looking into his eyes and telling him how much I loved him and was going to miss him when he was gone. I came home from school later that day and cried.

Ahh, but the times with your pets is the best. They're awesome.

Yeah....it totally sucks, but we know they lived the best of lives getting to have fun, sleep, eat...they live better than we do lol.

Nothing wrong with being sad, I remember when my parents called me up at school after Christmas break, my 19 year old cat had to be put to sleep...sucked hardcore, but I at least got that final holiday with her.
