This is a good post.

I like the example you cited at the end. I think some people are more naturally homosexual then others, too. I think there are cases where they are born gay and other cases where they learned it through their upbringing and then other cases where they just decided to change sexual orientation after leading a straight life for the majority of their life.

Maybe some of these people who learned to be gay through their upbringing or influences develop these nuances we associate with homosexuality to fit in and be accepted. Or maybe they want to do it to announce to everyone that they are homosexual without actually saying it.

It's a pretty deep and interesting topic and a touchy subject, I'm glad we have mostly stayed on track here. Some good perspectives all around.

Yeah. I would view homosexuality to be a choice. Even if they acted homosexual from the beginning they could always choose to stay metrosexual (a straight guy that acts like a girl. basically).

And the original question it depends on how far he takes it. If he's just homosexual and doesn't keep any relationships going then I'll be okay. If he's pushing it to having relatioships with guys as staight guys would with girls then I might feel like I somewhat failed because it could threaten my son's health with
risk of HIV and other fatal std's.

p.s I'm nowhere close to having a child at this point in my life so if this sounds odd then that's why. Right now that's the best answer I can give.

So what kind of parenting do you think produces gay children? I've seen gay people from strict parents, religious parents, "liberal" parents, etc.

I personally know a lot of gay dudes that are products of single mother households.

There are alot of black men who are raised in single mother households but I haven't seen anything suggesting that there's a higher rate of homsexuality in the black community.

I'm from a single mother household. Never had a male "father figure" in my entire life. However it helps she was a pro basketball player and all about sports. I bet she's happy she had a son.

Nowhere did I say all boys raised in single mother households were gay.

I said that MOST of the gay dudes that I know are products of not having a MAN in the house while growing up

If you love your kids, no matter who or what they choose as their partner down the road shouldn't matter. Yes, I think I would be a bit heartbroken, but nothing that can be done. You loved your kids before knowing the news and you should still love them after the fact. But at times this is not how things work out. I always want my kids a part of our lives and as long as they aren't breaking the law there is nothing that can be done if they chose same sex partners.

I have a sister-in-law that is gay and my in-laws were very upset for a long time and to the point where my father-in-law wouldn't talk to her much for a period of time. My boss is gay and he is very open with all of us at work about it. I have always looked at someone's sexual preference in a way that if it makes them happy, that is all that matters. I think at times some people are not secure with their sexuality and causes them to go off the deep end.

Well I'm really pleasantly suprised to see the open-mindedness of this group...one of the main reasons I frequent these boards.

Like others have said, initially, there would be a sense of shock and probably dissapointment. I wouldn't be dissapointed in myself or my son, but just for the fact that I wouldn't get to share certain things that I hoped to do.

It'd kind of be in the same general sense of if my son didn't like sports. As a father, there are certain things you hope to share with your son like teaching him about girls, etc. and that would just be something I'd miss out on.

I would get over it and definitely accept what ever choice he made and would support him 100% either way.

That said I've seen first hand how some parents are disappointed in their child for being homosexual, I know a couple who are very religious and they resent their son for being gay, they have tried many times to turn him straight and it just doesn't happen (as most have said and I also believe that sexuality isn't something you choose, you're wired one way or another), I feel bad because its not like hes flamboyant making a scene everywhere he goes, hes just a normal person and you'd never even know if he was gay or not because he doesn't go around flaunting it so unless you actually get to know him you'd never know.

I think that has to be an awful feeling going through life having to basically deal with your parents being ashamed of you, thats extremely cold and closed minded and I don't see how you could do that to your child whether you agree with it or not.

When I was young I felt like it would have been a failure. When my son was an infant I felt the same way. But now that he's damn near outta high school it wouldn't matter to me at all. As long as he would do better than I did and can find his way in the world then I'd be happy. If he's happy then I'm happy. Fortunately I don't have to worry about this though since he's not.

You are implying that living circumstances impact whether or not someone is straight/gay. Do you believe that being around all female family (who actually act like females) leads to a greater chance of being gay?

Maybe becoming gay can be a combination of influence/genetics.

Anyways I don't know if there is a way to prove this other than having an unethical controlled test where you have a baby boy...let him be influenced by zero outside sources for 15 years...and then put a guy and girl in the room and see what happens.

i wouldnt allow it i would make him change his sexulaity...on the other hand if i had a girl i might be ok with it..but if i had a boy no it wouldnt fly in my house im agianst that.
