Re: Anyone w/ degree in Finance??
I have a finance degree from the University of Notre Dame and I will give you the most important piece of advice ever...
INTERN/MAKE CONNECTIONS while in school. Set yourself up with a job before you get out of school.
I didn't and now I'm a research analyst for a small company. Not very good pay and it's basically a resume filler. -
Re: Anyone w/ degree in Finance??
Depends on how much you like things like forecasting, projecting numbers and general accounting.
You can get paid well in the long run but your time won't be there for you simply because you work alot!
I dont have the degree but worked in accounting/finance and with the folks that do for about 8 years.
Unless you're a real numbers junkie its not very exciting. Are you sure thats what you want to do?Comment

Re: Anyone w/ degree in Finance??
I got a degree in managerial economics (which, because of the course I took was the closest I could get to a finance degree at my univeristy).
I am a financial analyst for a major retailer.
We run our department very thin, but me and my boss forecast and analize sales, salaries, advertising and a few other minor accounts for about 1100 retail stores.
In short, we monitor trends and other things that impact our business and react accordingly by updating changing our forecast based on the latest data we have.
On the sales side, we work hand in hand with our CFO and on the salary side we work closely with our operations group making sure they keep the salaries in line and react to the business at our stores.
It's very interesting, but also very redunandt. Every week, month, quarter and year require the same reports, the same updates, the same meetings, etc. It's a very cyclical profession to be in.Comment

Re: Anyone w/ degree in Finance??
I have a Masters in finance, BS in economics, BSBA in Accounting. I am an accounting manager in a wealth management firm.
Listen to everyone. Make some connections and get as much experience as you can through internships and such. Get as many cheerleaders on your side as possible, especially people within the industry.
Bottom line about jobs is you can always find somebody to do them. What's going to separate you from the pack is your social skills and your ability to fit in within a firm. You need to demonstate that you can do the work, but also do it efficiently and always with a good attitude. I interviewed alot of recent graduates to fill a staff position recently and I was amazed at how little these people knew both education wise and their social skills. I swear the local colleges are just handing out paper. So when you are in class, learn it inside and out, don't cheat yourself and only do what you have to do to get a good grade. Learn it and commit it to memory.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
