Re: Finding a summer job is tough!

I have two jobs this summer; one in the morning and one at night. They aren't very good paying, but thats why I'm doing two. My parents say I have nothing better to do this summer and I have to pay for my laptop and books for college. Plus I'd probably just be sitting around playing College Hoops or GH all day lol... not like thats a bad thing though.

Forget "finding a job", just go and find a lawn mower and a rake... People will pay decent money for someone to mow their lawns and do some light landscaping work (trim shrubs, do clean ups etc..).

That's ONE way I got started in business at a young age. Just go door to door, do a good job on the ones that want your services, and let word of mouth (and craigslist) do the rest...

You can make a decent buck, make your own hours, and quit before school starts up again.

Whatever you end up doing, I wish you luck...

Ive been looking for a job for 1-2 months and the job market here in Oregon is terrible, for instance, places like Pizza Hut are requiring that you have a college degree to be an assistant manager, and thats ridiculous. I either dont get a call, I call and cant ever get a hold of them or I have a good interview and then never hear from them again, terrible time to be without a job thats for sure. If I didnt have things to sell on the side, I would be homeless by now.

I used to deliver pizza and other foods for a mom and pop Italian place in college. You will make more money then at a chain and they tend to look out for you if you do a good job. Just my $.02.

Im in the same boat as you guys, I got offered a job at Best Buy until they did a backround check on me and found out that I had a DUI. I put an application at about 10 other places but no bites. This sucks...

I you mention its for the summer, atleast qualify it by saying if you like it, you would consider working during school. Most companies don't like to hire someone for only 1-2 months because of the hiring/training cost.

You're screwed. I think working at a small local business is your only option; they tend not to do background checks.

Just to add on, I hate my job and would love to quit and get another one, but with the job market as bad as it is right now, I'm clinging to this job I hate like a life raft and I suggest everyone do the same. The times are only going to get tougher for a while.

Trust me, Ive called them back the next day, Ive called them back multiple times and its as if they decided to ignore me. Ive had interviews where the guy told me he would do everything in his power to get me my own store to manage, and if that didnt work he could atleast get me an assistant manager position so I could work my way up the ladder, and then I never heard from him, he was never in when I would call, wouldnt return my calls and when I went in the store he vanished to the stock room and never came out while I was there, really pathetic if you ask me. The previously described episode happens constantly, I helped Circuit City catch some thiefs while I was in there shopping, while I was working for Best Buy, and helped save them money because of it, the manager liked me and wanted to hire me on as LP, then suddenly, yet again, the guy vanished from existence.
