    "In a minute"

Okay...serious old man question here. I've heard and read more and more of people using the phrase "in a minute" to describe a lengthy amount of time that has passed between events.

    Examples:
"Man, I haven't talked to you in a minute!"
"Yeah, we hung out at that bar for a minute."
"I haven't been to that neighborhood in a minute!"

I don't get it! A minute is not a long amount of time. Why use it to describe the opposite? Can someone (probably younger) explain it to me? Where did it start? Why is it used? I honestly don't get it.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone use that term...LOL Your post is the first I've ever heard of it.

It's really a black thing to be honest with you. I use it all the time and it throws people (usually non-black people) for a loop. It's something that was being said around the time I was in junior high and I've been using it ever since.

LOL, check this post. I didn't want to call him out specifically but this post is what made me write this thread. It's something I've wondered about for a while...this post finally made me ask someone about it.

Well that explains it. I had no idea it was used primarily by black people, so I apologize if anyone thought I was trying to start some sort of racial discussion. I never really paid attention to who was saying it...I was more dumbfounded by the fact that it was being said at all, lol.

I relate "in a minute" to when someone says they'll be there in a short amount of time, which ironically is usually more than a minute.

Me too! But the first time I heard "in a minute" used in this context, it was while running into a guy I went to high school with and hadn't seen in 10 years. "Oh man, T.J.!! I haven't seen you in a minute!"

I was like..."Uhh...it's been like 10 years, Charles."

                    I was quite confused.

Yep. So it makes sense, what you said. I guess EG, Longhorn, and mjb don't hang out with black people. Racists.

I don't know if it's necessarily a black thing, I hear a lot of white people say it, though probably nobody older than 25-26.
