Where do I sign to start working???? I decided 3-4 years ago that I don't want to waste my entire life at work. I mean, of course I need a decent salary and all that, but if I can have it (+/-) at a 9-5 job, I'd definitely pick it up. I have no dreams about getting rich, neither about holding a high position. I just want a decent salary with regular hours. That's what I'm thinking about a lot these days.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?

My stepfather works four 10-hour days... Monday through Thursday. He starts at 6 and ends at 5 with an hour in there for lunch. He rarely stays past five. Very rarely. Same with going in on Fridays... I think in the 3 or 4 years that he's had this job, he's stayed after 5 for work 5 or 6 times and has gone in on Friday 2 or 3 times.

He works at a design and invention company near Pittsburgh. The owner is loaded and basically sets these guys up with the perfect working environment. If you saw his "office," you'd crap your pants. I'm not sure whether or not the contents of their office building are public or not, so I wont get into it too deep, but it's sick. He basically works in Disney Land, just shrunken down into an office. It's supposed to spark creativity and encourage workers to WANT to stay after hours, which they often do, but not to work... they stay to play the multiple Xbox 360's and Nintendo Wii's that are hooked up to HUGE moniters and surround sound and to play ping pong and slot cars in the office.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?

I'm pretty fortunate in this regard in that I almost always work 7:45 to 4:30 (with 45 minutes for lunch). In 5 years I have never come into the office on Saturdays, and usually when I have to work "overtime", I do the work at home. The trade-off is that the pay is much lower than most attorneys make. My first job required me to work at least 50 hours a week. Those 10 hours are very important to me and worth a little less money. What's the point of having extra money when you don't have the time to spend it?

I usually work 8-6 every week with no break and eating lunch at my desk.

9-5 still exists for a lot of federal employees. Granted their not high-level positions but they put in their 40 and leave.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?

Nope, 9-5 is a thing of the past. Many employers expect their people to work longer hours to show they are dedicated. If not, they'll be scrutinized behind closed doors and often will be the first to go if layoffs occur. Not to mention these same companies will rarely promote someone who only works their 8 hours and doesn't put in extra. Every company I've worked for has been this way. My current employer and former boss (who just left - thank God) told me that even though I do get lunch and he can't stop me from leaving the office to take it, he EXPECTS me to work through it at my desk. I talked to the National Labor Relations Board and they said it is entirely within his right to ask me that - which surprised me.

Anyhow, my hours vary everyday, but it's often more than 8. Sometimes it's working at home at night due to a server problem (having a Blackberry that must be on me 24/7 sucks) or sometimes it's that I have too much to do that I have to stay late to meet deadlines.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?

I'm glad I found this thread because I was starting to think that I was the only person in the world anymore that worked lame hours. All my friends have decent hours for the most part, with exception of one of them.
I use to be a Manager at a Clothes store. Sounds fair enough,eh? not even. It paid good and that is where it ended. We were only allowed to work 40 hours a week but worked 10 hours one day-maybe 7 the next, staying late alot with a 6 to 7 hour turnaround and then working 10.5 hours or longer. I think you get the cycle.
It went on with only split days off ever and split shifts even for the managers because people only worked there for about a week or so before they quit. I was in charge of "putting the hammer down" as they put it- on the workers, something I don't like to do. Our head manager would get pissed at a worker for stupid or no apparent reason and make us low level managers deal out bad assingments and pick at them. All the time it had to look like we had the problem with them and the head manager was an "angel". I know alot of places do this but that isn't me to harrass people. I find solutions and work with people rather than force someone to want to quit or even call me out in the parking lot after work.
When I worked those weird and long/short/split hours- a 10 minute break was never to be. You got a half an hour lunch if you worked over 6 hours and that was it. So, if you worked 11 hours-that short break was it and you didn't even get to go to the bathroom unless you had someone in your area to replace you. Also-we were in charge of "managing" our 40 hour week. Example: Let's say you were scheduled to work 8am to 6pm. Someone quit that day so they needed me to work a half an hour or so over until relief came in. I had to add up my hours and make sure through the week I NEVER went over 40 hours. This wasn't easy, you had to be dead accurate and the hours changed all the time. If you did go over, you got a warning. Too many warnings and it's see ya' later player. I found out the hard way when I started because no one informed of this procedure. When I got called in the office and the riot act was read to me,I told them I was not aware of that. They said the person that trained was suppose to tell me. I said he didn't-which is true. He got railed/now he hated me and start to lean on me hard.
I couldn't take it anymore. I've had hard jobs before but the drama here could make the most even tempered person want to drive his car through the front window of the building. I'm not that kind of person,so I gave them a 2 week notice. They got pissed and told me to leave now if I didn't want to be part of their "team". Then, the manager told me that if anyone called about me for another job that they would say I didn't leave in good standing. I don't think if that assingment was even 9 to 5 most wouldn't want that crapola job. After that,I asked about hours before I would consider any job.

My job is a 9-5 job....In reality though, there could 3 hours of actual work or ten. Whatever problems or concerns the day brings pretty much dictates how long I have to work.

Then again, I am a buyer for a large window manufacturer, and I work with companies all over the country and the world so if someone is closed or not open I cant really do much.

I remember the 9 to 5 term when I was in grade school. Now being 31 I've never had a 9 to 5 job. 8 to 5 seems to be the norm now for people who work 1st shift.

Never seen it. If you worked 9-5 you wouldn't get a 8 hour day in unless you got paid for lunch.

                        I work 8:15 to 5 (I never work past 5) and I get a 45 minute lunch.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?

My described hours are 8-4:30 M-F but vary a great amount and I have to be on-call at pretty much all times. When things are working well it's usually quiet which is very nice. I can work from home whenever I want but I prefer to go to the office at least four days a week (now that I live with the gf, hehe). I also have trouble focusing at our place since we don't have a ton of space and I don't have a dedicated room as an office, just a desk in the living room.

But each day I typically work from home for a while in the AM and take my time getting ready which is great because I can avoid the stress for rushing around and rush hour traffic. I typically get to the office between 10-11am and stay until 4 or so. Of course I get those days when things are a mess and take a long time to get straightened out and I'm working until 7pm but as a whole I couldn't ask for a better schedule situation - now we just need to grow so I can make some more $$$!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones then. I work for a family business. We own and manage a large apartment complex from 9-5 during the week and I get an hour lunch with pay. But there are nights where I get called out on a problem like a lockout or noise complaint when our security guard can't be reached. But that only happens about once every 2 weeks. I get a free apartment too which sounds nice but getting ready to move out cause I got residents that knock on my door at all hours of the night.
