Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
My dad is the head of sales at a local branch of a multi-national countertop/laminate manufacturer. He works 7-4:30 everyday, the office is closed before/after that. The only time he has to work overtime (but doesn't get paid for it because he's on salary pay, not hourly) is a couple times a year when they do inventory.Comment

Working in the motor pool in the military those were the typical hours. Of course, everything was subject to change at any given moment but for the most part, we worked 9-5.PS: You guys are great.

Fireman.
I will say this....other than the fact you don't know what the heck can happen to you(but it goes with the territory, you know that going in, so no complaints).....it does take some getting used to .....working nights....working weekends....working holidays(yes, we all get paid for the holidays, but some guys have to work it)....but we get to "trade" our shifts, so you get the guys who don't mind working those shifts(you can only take the "outlaws re. wifes family) for so many years....so it usually works out in the end. Single guys work Christmas....married guys work New Years Eve etc...
It's not all rosy(obviously....)...but it's a great job in a great city...and the Department is pretty flexible(if you've got the time on the job) about moving around....wanna work in a "busy" area....South Jamaica, Bushwick, South Bronx...you can...want to work in Manhattan....they always need guys there.....so you can make what you want of it.....and the brothers are top notch everywhere.
Wouldn't trade it for any job(well, maybe swimsuit models/Victoria's Secret wardrobe adjustor)...even with the mediocre pay.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
Just a side note (or whatever you call it): When I say "9 to 5" I mean 8-4, 8-5, 9-6...etc. I work 9-6 but some days I have to stay. So at least 1-2 times a week I stay until 7:30-8. Last Tuesday I stayed until 11! But I used to work at the biggest advertising agency here, and it was on shifts or something like that. 3 times a week 9-5, 2 times a week - noon to...could be 11, 1am, 4am... And they cut the extra hours paying after awhile, so basically I worked at least twice a week extra time for free. In my current job I also don't get extra, it's pretty common in my field.
My dream is to work in a place like a city library. I can give up the 9-5, but let me work at a quiet place, no pressure, no presentations, no "this was supposed to be ready for yesterday"...etc. I don't want this! Just give me a boring job (with regular hours, if possible) and an average salary. Don't want to get rich, don't want to be an executive, don't want any pressure. Sure, when I have kids and maybe mortgage I would "kill" for every $100, but I'd like to think that I won't.My Specs:

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
My dad always works 9 to 5 and that's it. He might work through lunch though, I'm not sure.
My mom works 8:30-5. She occasionally will stay an extra half hour, and a couple of times a year will work weekends.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
Back in college, my boy and used to agree that we wanted jobs that were 9-5, Monday-Friday. Well, now he works 7-5:30 Monday-Thursday and I work 6-3 or 4, Monday-Friday.

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
Let's be honest here... most everyone I know works 40 hours... or is at the job 40 hours but they don't work 40 hours... more like 35-ish. I've worked for various companies in the past 10 years and that's standard. Some of the sales people will work more, that's for sure, but I've never seen these so-called 60-70 hr days that many people here work. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I don't know if it's really the norm today. Oh yeah, I make 85K annually, so I'm not a complete schlep working on a factory line."Well the NBA is in great hands but if I had to pick the single greatest player on the planet, I take Kobe Bryant without hesitation." - Michael Jordan, 2006Comment

Re: 9 to 5...is there such thing?
I average approximately 50 hours per week. There are some weeks where 40 hours is the norm and there are weeks were 70 hours is the norm. This is the life of most people in IT - especially those that deal with the day to day company infrastructure.
The worst 3 day stretch I ever did was a 17 hour day followed by a 15 hour day and an 11 hour day. We moved an entire office on a Friday at 5pm and everything had to be up and running by Monday at 8am. That was an interesting experience. Our thanks for it was a ****ty t-shirt with the company logo.
IMO Blackberries are one of the biggest culprits in terms of ruining "free time". Many in different business functions are required to carry one with them 24/7/365. I've found that I spend a lot of my "free time" responding to emails/txts on my Blackberry as it's required for the job.Last edited by mjb2124; 06-23-2008, 10:20 PM.Comment
