The plot of a upcoming 2009 film...

The plot is set in Richmond, VA in the year 1976. An unhappily married couple (Diaz and Marsden) receive a box from a mysterious stranger (Langella), who tells them that pushing a button on the box will award them with a large monetary sum, and simultaneously, someone the couple does not know will die.

So say we got ahold of this box....say it gives us a cool $1000 every time we press the button on it, at the expense of some anonymous persons life..what would you do?

I seriously don't think I could do it for a billion dollars. I'm not just saying that to sound good, but we don't live in China. I could never push myself to do something that would kill someone that I didn't know just for my selfish reasons.

Maybe once, but I would feel too guilty afterward to ever do it again. Greedy as it sounds, I only hope I get a very large monetary sum from that one push.

As for the movie's sake, I hope this isn't some unbelievable magical box thing, and instead it's actually tied to when the button is pushed a signal is sent to someone to kill someone, you know? Maybe they're already held hostage, and BOOM!

The guilt would drive me insane, and the money wouldn't be worth it.

Maybe ONCE every couple years but I still dont know if I would have the guts to kill off someone that could be important to many people. And I would be so guilty that I wouldnt even be happy that I got $1000. So IDK

Id only use it if i needed the money to do something necessary, like get $ to pay for my wife in the hospital or something where i felt i had no choice. I wouldnt just use it for spending money or anything.

the reason i gave the scenario of 1g per button push is I figured itd be easier to just press it one time for a couple mil as apposed to keep needing to press it...

Im guessing in the movie, it would be a different amount everytime? Like, your not guaranteed to get a huge sum everytime. Maybe the first time you get like 10 grand, so your like "wow this was so worth it, ill push it again." Only the next time you get like 1 grand... Thatd be trippy

For a billion dollars I'd push it at least once, maybe a couple times. "One life for a million". Do you guys know how much good, how many people I could save with a billion dollars?

I don't know the "break even" point (money vs. life), but I'd seriously consider it for a large sum, as long as I could be philanthropic with the money. If I was greedy the death would weigh on my mind and I'd go nuts after a while.

Next time you think about buying blood diamonds, slave wage clothing, or go shopping at Wal-Mart, think of "The Box".


Edit: And I don't think I could bring myself to press the button, unless it was for an extremely huge amount of money, well over 5 or 10 million. My conscience wouldn't stop reminding of it. For $1000 bucks, I would never do it.

My analytical, cold hearted side wouldn't have a problem with using "the box". We've got over 6 billion people in this world for cryin' out loud! It's way too overpopulated so the less people in less developed countries the better.

In reality though i'd think long and hard about even pressing it because one should never take a life. I'd probably press it once every 2 years.
