Ohio man puts down 16 coffee cans full of coins for half the price of pickup

CINCINNATI (AP) _ An Ohio man who says he doesn't trust paper money has delivered enough coins to cover half the price of a brand new pickup truck.

Employees at a dealership in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale say 70-year-old James Jones plunked down 16 coffee cans full of coins Tuesday for a new Chevrolet Silverado.

Salesman David Crisswell says employees spent 90 minutes counting the collection of dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins, which covered half the $16,000 price of the pickup.

Jones and his wife, Betty, wrote a check for the other half of the cost.

Jones' son says his dad has always preferred to pay with coins. Dennis Jones says he's most amazed that his penny-pinching father decided to replace his 1981 pickup, which struck his father when its parking brake failed last year, putting him in a hospital.

Doesn't "trust" paper money? What the hell does that even mean?

That moron should have been investing all that change and he probably could have used it to buy the whole truck and not just half.

Well, I guess us people in cincinnati aren't too different. I payed for half of one of my college hoops games in change, well, that was only 10 dollars in change. But $8,000 in change??? Now that's just crazy

This kind of reminds of the story of that old lady that got killed by her coins when the attic collapsed on her because of all the bottled coins that were up there. Old people and their coins.

I think those charge a percentage. I'm not sure, but that's what someone told me.

And yes, Ohio is the best state.

Exactly, what a "crazy old man" line of thought. I wonder what he thinks of the sounds coming out of the phone and radio, or the moving images on the TV?
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

                      Just another day in Ohio...

If Canada ever invaded, they would get past us and our vast amounts of coins and coffee cans.

                      You've been warned Canada.

Yeah they do, I can't remember how much though. I used one once, it was something like 6.9 cents per dollar or 8.9 cents per dollar.

Good story. 16 coffee cans dont seem like that much though. But I guess if he had a bunch of half dollars it adds up.
