    I'm Frustrated, Need To Rant.

I am an extremely ambitious person. I set these extremely high goals and I know that I can succeed. I know I'm a hard worker, and I know I apply a lot of force and effort to the things that I want. I'm ruthless. I know that most of the time that's the only way to get what you want.

I wanted to go back to school in Chicago at DePaul University and double major in English and Communication. This decision was made whilst at A&T. I applied for re-admission, made sure my credits would transfer (and they did), and talked to my academic advisor almost on a daily basis. The only thing left was to come up with the money to pay for it.

Because we live in the United States, and because we are citizens who place a huge importance on attending college, I figured coming up with the funds would be a fairly simple task. I hit up Sallie Mae for the loan, and they said I had bad credit.

I do some research on my credit and it turns out that a previous bank in Chicago charged me for a bunch of ****, but they wouldn't tell me why these charges were made or why they didnt notify me about it when it first occured. This is what gave me the bad credit. My mother and I decide to clear it up anyway, pay the pank and yadda yadda yadda.

Credit takes 6 months to update.

After several appeal letters written to the university, It appears I am still $2000 short. There is no where I can get that money. Our economy, apparently, is so poor that young ambitious brothers like myself can't get loans to go to these type of schools anymore.

College now seems like a privilege to those who can afford it instead of a birth-right to those who yearn for it and deserve it.

    This is how I feel.

    Here's an example.

The pillow that I sleep on requires a certain amount of force to be moved. As a human, I can lift the pillow from the bed and toss it to the next room with a certain amount of effort. In fact, that only takes a small amount of my effort to be done. But I can push the wall that seperates my room from brothers as hard as I can..forever...and it won't budge. I use way more energy and effort pushing this wall than I do lifting and tossing the aforementioned pillow, yet the results are not the same.

I say all of that to say this.

It requires little to no effort to go to any school around here. I could probably still get into A&T. I put forth exponentially more effort to go to DePaul and it just won't happen. There's nothing I can do about that.

The most frustrating thing in life is when you don't get what you want and its not your fault. You can live with it, deal with it if you don't get what you want due to a poor decision that you make. You can learn from that. But when you feel like you do everything right and the only thing that is in the way of your goal is something you have no control over, that is a powerless feeling.

This is when most young brothers throw in the towel and give up on what they want in their life. Traditionally, that's why some talented, initially-amitious, bright people turn to drugs or crime. It's times like these when one gets tired of life ****ting on them and decides to throw it all away.

I, like I have done my whole life, will defy this law of tradition.

Sorry to hear this bro. Sometimes we do all that we can and things still go wrong. It's life and we just have to move on from it. There are a ton of great colleges out there. My advise would be to look into some other ones. Keep your head up and eventually all of your hard work will pay off. Good Luck.

I've been through A LOT of hard knocks myself so I can definitely understand what you're going through. The best advice I can give you is to suck it up and keep it moving. Things in life don't always work out the way we want them to. This is just a roadblock, your story is far from complete. Regroup, figure out your next move, and stay focused. The worst thing you can do is let something like this eat you up because it accomplishes nothing. All it does is make you feel like ****. Stay positive homey.

Why can't you go to a school that costs less?

I can but that's far from the point. There are many many many MANY reasons why I wanted to go back to school in Chicago, specifically DePaul University.

A lot of times, you just gotta sacrifice man.

Like I actually wanted to stay in LA and go to UCLA?

I almost feel bad saying that about UCLA, since it's such a great school, but I sure as hell didn't want to stay here.

Yeah dude, I'm starting in the Fall. Obviously not my first choice but again, the money made me stay in LA.

I know you went through Sallie Mae (not familiar with them), did you go through Fedral Student Aid (FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/)? Instead of going through a private lender, go through the government. Depending on your and your families financial situation, you may even qualify for grants instead of loans, which don't have to be repaid.

I'm not sure if you have gone this route or not, but it amazes me how many people either don't know about this or don't think they will qualify. There is a ton of money out there for anyone that wants to go to college. I've never known anyone who went thought his program who didn't get offered more in loans then they needed. Payments and interest can be defferred until graduation and interest rates are typically low.

I can't remember the age, but if you are independant from your parents, only your income will be counted. Up until then, I think your parents are included.

                    Good Luck.

I've always felt college was a privlege (even more so in your case when the college in name is a Private school). Sometimes it's a privlege to those who work hard, get good grades and other times to those who have money, power or the right last name, but regardless it's a privlege. I'm sure there are some smarter people who attend public universities than those that attend Ivy League schools simply because they didn't have the funds for the tuition or aren't the spawn of an alumni. I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of kids across this country who have the grades to get into schools like Stanford, but don't have the money.

Maybe you have to go back to work for a year or a semester to save that extra money or maybe you'll have to start writing essays to win some scholarships.

Don't give up on DePaul, man. I don't know what other options are out there (student loan, personal loans, scholarships, taking a year off to work, etc) but if you are determined enough I would think you could make it work eventually. You're still young, no rush to finish college IMO

Ok how old r you? If your older then 24 then you should get all sorts of grants in illinois. Also, I dont understand why you cant get student loans? I went back to school at 25, school was 25k a year - 12k was paid in grants and the rest in loans.

Student loan companys trip over themselves to give out huge loans like that.

Also, I dont know your situation - but you really should get all take all the gen ed classes at a junior college - get your associates - Depaul will take up to 70 hours with a Assc. then you only have to worry about paying for 4-5 semesters at depaul.

For those asking, I'm 20 years old, turn 21 in February. I dont know if I made it clear, but even after getting all of the money from the gov't that I could through federal loans and all of that other stuff, I'm still short.
