Stew...unless you are looking to sell...you're not losing money, you're losing value.
    What's the difference?
If you ride it out and even perhaps pick up some more stock(if you believe that the market will rebound....)....the value will be back and hopefully when you are ready to take your profits, things will be fine.

I'm not retiring for a few years and I "hated" to see the market jump the way it has over the last few years. It just cost me more to buy.
The guys who should have been loving it(the market rising the way it did) are guys that were ready to retire and ready to take their profits.
Now you just gotta sit tight.

You know how on nerdy message boards you'll see posts about Afro-beat-funk or Sweedish-black-metal-fusion where people pretend to know what the other people are talking about, when, in reality, only 2 people on the entire earth actually know anything about the topic and everyone else just pretends because they think other people know? And then everyone looks really stupid?

That's what the economy is, only I don't think there's the original person who knows what they are talking about. I think everybody is just making up nonsense. I'm firmly convinced that if somebody on CNN blamed the economic issues on the fortunes of the New Orleans' Saints losing yesterday which caused people to lose faith in the NO rebuilding effort with bonds or oil or cocaine shipments or some bologna, at least 45% of the country would buy Reggie Bush jerseys and believe that the Saints' winning would actually help our economy.

I reckon the economy will be fine. If it's not, I'm willing to posse up and form a roaming militia, but I demand the title "Chief Warlord".

Dollar Cost Average Stew...... if you believe in the company, and they have good fundamentals, nothing wrong with taking advantage of what this situation really is. ALot of companies in the financial industry took a hit today just on speculation and hype. The good companies will return to their true value, sometimes it isnt a market fall, its a buying opportunity.

My thoughts exactly. Again, taternuts and I agree on something.

The 401k is getting blasted, but I see it as an opportunity to keep buying at lower prices.

This will all shake out eventually, its like the dot com bubble, there were hundreds of those companies, and all the weak ones went away or got bought out with only a few remaining, same thing will happen here. Dont let this scare you away from investing or saving for retirement. This is why buying on fundamentals is so important

Well...maybe "slightly" more serious than the .dot com problem.
Lehman and Merrill Lynch were both huge ESTABLISHED companies.
Lehman Bros. was a 150+ year old company!
However...they both got greedy and stupid(ie lax in their business practice which was directly related to their greed) and in the case of Lynch....they are very lucky that B o A was there to bail them out.

I agree though......it will be a good time to buy or buy back in if you got out.

Amen! I have the 30 year mortgage, but I don't have a government job. I am fortunate however to be working for an industry that is providing a service that is currently in high demand..the railroad.

I'm not going to lose anything tangible so I guess I should just relax.
If you switch to low risk now, your money is gone for good. Do some research, there is still some money to be made out there.

Well my money is in the hands of professionals, I'm not investing myself because I don't have all the proper education to handle it.

                    Hopefully everything turns out alright.

Never leave your money in someone else's hands unless they have skin in the game too. Make sure your funds are in the same funds as these "professionals" you speak of.

Re: Stock market in a free fall

Its a nasty mix of bad problems right now.

                          1) Oil (though it is coming down, but the hurricanes arent helping)
                          2) Real Estate
                          3) Mortgages (particulary FNMA and FMAC)
                          4) Financial Companies (related to real estate)
                          5) Liquidity in markets (ARS, AIG etc)

There isnt anything spurring on the economy right now. Everyone is afraid to spend their money, no one can buy/afford houses), money is being pulled out of accounts and put under mattresses, with all the money flowing out of the economy and not back in, we are helping stall the economy.

                          Truly unique (and aggravating times)

As if Wall Street and America as a whole needs to hear this but AIG is on the verge of going under. The US government would be wise to bail it out like they did to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because AIG is the world's largest insurer. If they go down it's going to affect the whole frickin' world!
