Baseball hasn't changed much at all.
What sport do you think has gotten the furthest away from its roots?

Eh?
So the lowering of the pitchers mound in '69, smaller ballparks, juiced baseballs, juiced players, specialization in pitching, the death of the 4 man rotation, the DH in the AL, interleague play and Free Agency hasn't changed baseball at all?

The oldest exported sport in your country. The game was first popularized in Canada and is actually Canada's official sport. Don't believe me? Check out the legislation on it in Ottawa yourself.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Lacrosse was started before there were even borders, it was played from Canada to Mexico, from Florida to the Rocky Mountains. I would have hated to be a goalie when the ball was a rock and there was no protective equipment.Comment

Interleague play, steroids, and free agency are pointless additions because those have been in every sport. Field modifications have been about equal to those in football and less than those in basketball.
Basically you're left with specialization in pitching and the DH. College football has had no equipment, 1 platoon rules, no scholarships-unlimited scholarships-new scholarship rules, and the forward pass. 99% of current offensive plays didn't even exist 100 years ago. I'd argue that college football has changed more in the last 60 years than major league baseball has in it's history.
I'd say baseball has probably changed the least of all the major sports aside from golf (if you want to consider it a sport).Comment

And having the all star game determine home field advantage? Baseball has changed.Comment

But in terms of on the field play, baseball hasn't really changed other than gloves getting bigger, the catchers having more protection, the mound being lowered, and the bats getting lighter.Comment

Is there something you aren't telling us?
I think it's big time Div. I college football. You'd think with all these new renovations and luxury suites that it was a professional sport. These kids are getting USED, but you could also argue that the kids are using the schools too.

Re: What sport do you think has gotten the furthest away from its roots?
Every sport has grown and developed, sometimes for the better and sometimes not. Just because it changed doesn't mean I'd categorize it as "going away from it's roots". Making the strategy more sophisticated or improvement equipment for health's sake (football) does not fall under the category of 'going away from your roots' to me. Improving style of play and fundamentals (the jumpshot and fastbreak in basketball) isn't going away from it's roots.
I think as a whole all the sports have gotten better over time and I can't pick one sport for this conversation, you can make a very compelling case for most sports.
Quite frankly, pro sports would be pretty unpopular if there was no forward pass in football, the NBA used peach baskets still and had to bust out a ladder to retrieve the ball after each make and damn near every baseball game was 2-1."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier
