What sport do you think has gotten the furthest away from its roots?

Re: What sport do you think has gotten the furthest away from its roots?
I'd say NFL football as well but not because they change the rules so much. That's actually one of the more progressive things any league has done. Every other league is too dinosauric to make rule changes that benefit the game.
It's a number of "safety" rules that get my goat. The QBs today are treated like chinaware. You can't even make a sack without possibly getting a roughing the passer call on you now. The most blatant example of how overprotective the league has been is the new definition of the rule that makes it illegal for a defender to put his full body weight on the QB.
I wish the rules were reverted back to about 1985. I'd be happy with that style of football.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I think off-court/field, basketball has changed the most. The personality of the sport has changed overall, as well as the "culture" of the sport. Now, as for the game itself, I honestly have no idea, but all of them, even hockey, have made considerable changes.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What sport do you think has gotten the furthest away from its roots?
Probably the NFL like others have said, but the NHL is a lot different since the inception of the trap, th game is way overcoached now and we are seeing less and less of players who play a specific type of game now. Now all the players coming into the league, skate fairly well, have good speed, know the angles, know the systems,it's very robotic.
Also they implemented that trapezoid behind the nets because some goalies played the puck too well and were able to stymie offensive opportunities all the time.Comment

Major League Lacrosse and this isn't even a debate if we are looking at the roots of the sport. Such as being an Indian game of war with mile long fields and frequent deaths on the field.Comment

I love college football, but I agree with this statement. It has went from an amateur game with no passing and low scores with smashmouth football back when Rutgers and some Ivy League school played the first game in 1869 to a spread offense, pass-heavy, money-generating league in the present with a BCS system that replaced the old bowl system, ect.Comment
