Re: Intelligence
I should also add that this sort of problem solving and pattern recognition is why I'm a firm believer in IQ tests. I think they are the closest to figuring out an accurate intelligence.
Mostly, if not, everything that was mentioned here as being factors of intelligence can be demonstrated through problem solving and pattern recognition.
Knowing music off a few notes? That's pattern recognition and it's tested in an standard IQ test.
Common sense can be measured through the problem solving questions in an IQ test.
Language can also be measured through problem solving in IQ tests as those tests may specifically word a problem to create confusion. A strong grasp on the language helps avoid those issues.
The problem I have with tests like the SAT is that most of the questions are based on a knowledge of a specific formula or set of rules. I have a hard time connecting intelligence to knowledge. I think they are two separate things.
To answer the original question, it is verbal ability. It is weighted highest on the WAIS/WISC, and is what most people use to determine a person's intelligence when they first meet. The verbal comprehension index is the most crystallized form of intelligence and is least likely to change over time. If you can articulate yourself, have a way with words, a good vocabulary, have solid verbal abstract reasoning, comprehension, can understand the connections between things, etc. you will appear and be judged as intelligent.Comment

Re: Intelligence
Multiple intelligences basically is the little league rule. Make everyone feel good about themselves.
Intelligence pretty much boils down to abstract reasoning and the understanding of future outcomes based present actions or circumstances.
I can appreciate people with talent in dance, charisma, etc. But lets face it, with multiple intelligences theories, a typical hot chick at the club who is shaking what her mama gave her and getting men to buy her drinks is practicing multiple intelligences based on that theory.
Some people are better at different things...why? I dont know but they are. My friend from high school for example...in school he was an idiot..but if you were going hunting, or building something, or doing something like that he was your guy. He has intelligence, he just has it regarding subjects that dont comform to traditional/societal intelligence indicators.
This is just a theory..I dont follow it like religion but it does make sense. guy is a geniusTexas. Football. All. Day.Comment

Re: Intelligence
Yea, the girl getting free drinks at the bar by flirting is using her brain.
That's why I always outsmart them by walking away."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Intelligence
I started my post-high school educational journey in Auburn's engineering program and am now hanging out in the DC politics scene.
Auburn's engineering program had folk literally straight out of The Big Bang Theory. I'm talking T-shirt tucked into jeans, unwashed goobers who could bang out a 10 term aerospace equation but couldn't introduce themselves. On the other hand, I'm not convinced my dad could do basic algebra, but the man can get congressmen and senators to vote exactly how he needs them to (no corruption jokes needed).
I personally am pretty damn smart, but when I talk, I can only do so in a very fast slurred southern slang or in perfect English that sounds really weird.
On the other hand, I think "measuring intelligence" is more or less worthless. If you need an engineer, you get an engineer. If you need someone who's working with people, you really don't need someone who's all that smart. An "off the charts" guy who's smoking crank isn't really all that useful, while a "duller" person who can pick up one skill and do it well can be very valuable.Comment

Re: Intelligence
how is she not? She is not compelled to the bar for no reason. she is going there to get drinks..how will she do that? dance and flirt. she is planning the whole thing how is that not intelligence? i mean shes at least smarter than the guys buying her drinks...kind of like strippers. yea they are usually trashy, uneducated, and looked down upon in our society... but they are making money basically doing nothing. seems like they are outsmarting the whole system. I think I have intelligence but I dont know how to dance like a stripper, so there must be some kind of talent/intelligence there too.

My point is, I can appreciate that anyone who finds a way to make a living has exercised certain intelligence. They offer something that someone demands and get money in return.
But that's basic. I'm talking about intelligence, creating things that are unknown. Understanding things that are unknown to the masses. Understanding the abstract and applying it to advance yourself or society. Building something that was previously uninvented. Re-building a car engine or hunting is more likely learned behavior with some instincts thrown in. Alot of things on the multiple intelligences can be more aptly applied to being a skill set rather than intelligence as I see it.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: Intelligence
I think intelligence can sometimes be subjective. I have a cousin who was so smart that she got to skip grades back in school, but there are some people who would say that when you talk to her, she didn't seem like she had a lick of common sense....she was just real "book smart". I know for a fact people can be smart in different ways, thats why you have "book smarts" and "street smarts". I also think there is a huge difference between being "ignorant" and being "stupid". I know that I am an under educated person but I dont believe I'm stupid by any means. Most people say I have a good sense of humor, and humor is considered to be a sign of intelligence. Stupid is someone you could teach but they still cant seem to get it, but ignorant is someone who just doesn't know better.
I like to think of the movie Rain Man.....he was stupid by our normal standards, but he also was a freaking genius in other ways. What comes easy for us was hard for him, but what comes hard for us was easy for him.
I wouldn't be so quick to judge someones intelligence based off how they post on a message board either. I'm one of those people who dont sit and think about what I'm gonna post. I just post off the top of my head and what comes out, comes out. I know there are probably some people who take plenty of time to articulate what they wanna say on a message board, but if you were to talk to them in real time, the things they say may not be so well thought out.Comment

Common sense is a function of intelligence, knowing the outcomes of your actions or any action before they occur requires intelligence. So when someone is booksmart and makes choices that lack common sense, they either really aren't that intelligent or they have some self destructive mental issue that forces them to make bad choices and sabotage themselves.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: Intelligence
When someone is "booksmart" but lack common sense they tend to have a phenominal memory and diligence to do their homework as instructed. It has nothing to do with intelligence.

Re: Intelligence
Everyone is treating someone that is considered smart as intelligent. That is not the case. Someone who is smart knows something that a lot of other people do not know. They have knowledge, but that does not make them intelligent. A mechanic knows how to fix your car, someone who does well in school, someone with a lot of commonsense, etc. These people might be considered smart by people who are not able to do the same thing.
Intelligence has nothing to do with knowledge. Someone who is intelligent doesn't need to know anything to be intelligent. Intelligence doesn't include what you know, sure most people who have a lot of knowledge are intelligent. Intelligence is how you approach problems, analyze them, and find solutions. The IQ test has questions that are designed to test your problem solving skills, not what you know.Comment
