So, I was just looking up youtube videos directed towards a project that I have to do for school about the West Nile Virus.

That's where I stumbled onto this video:

Is the media shaping all of our lives?

I mean, I've thought about it before. But not as much as I have after watching that.

So I was wondering if there were any of you who believe some of the things that were mentioned in the video, or anything of the sort.

Are our thoughts, really our thoughts? Is it all propaganda? Are we really under some type of mind control?

Just interested in hearing some of your thoughts.

I've never really had any serious thoughts about it. But now I'm really interested in what others think about this.

I think the media has taken a turn for the worse. I would rather hear stories about real american heroes. Not some movie actress who is getting into/out of rehab and all the other stuff around those lines.

The media has enormous effects on everything. The media is considered by some to be the fourth branch of the government and I can see why. The media decides what you hear and can select what you hear. They can take things out of context and many other things. The media has a profound impact on a lot of things, but I won't go on because that would delve into some infraction-worthy things.

It is easier nowadays to listen to alternative media (blogs, internet, talk radio, ect.), though, so the "mainstream media" may be on the way out only to be replaced by other socializing agents.

There are five socializing agents: 1.) Family, 2.) Peers, 3.) Church, 4.) School/Work, and 5.) Media. And that's straight out of the psychology textbook, so the media has a great affect.

That said, it isn't exactly controlling our mind. It socializes us and influences us to act certain ways. It doesn't control us IMO, but it's no secret that media is a very powerful influence in our lives. It helps make us who we are.

BTW, this guy that made this must really hate Bill O'Reilly, LOL.

I'd rather not to tell you the truth. I made a vow unto myself to stay away from issues that get me worked up on OS because thats not the reason why I come to OS. Many times I've contemplated about making blogs that would normally be unacceptable in the regular forums, but then I think to myself, do I really wanna go there on a video game website? So I choose to refrain from it.

In some cases I think we are, but I don't think the media controls every aspect of our everyday life.

Maybe the people that watch a lot of tv, but I just watch a few tv shows and sports don't take anything from it as what to believe so I'm going to say not me. Commercials don't work on me anymore, mainly because I won't keep them on to see what it's about because they annoy(which probably helps businesses because they want you to remember what the commercial was about).
