All of these apply to guys since OS is predominantly male:
#1 - Get with the times.
Do not wear apparel to flash attention to yourself. Booty shorts and really thin tank tops are not the way to properly dress anymore. If you're going to wear tight fitting clothing, make sure it looks alright on you.
#2 - Don't carry around a gallon of water.
Hydration is essential to those who want to treat their body right. However you don't need to parade around the gym with a gallon jug. If you need to carry around maybe a 32 oz container at the max. There are water fountains at every gym, no need to look like a meat head carrying a gallon jug around.
#3 - Leave your damn phone in your locker or car.
Texting isn't an exercise and it looks terrible. You're at the gym to work out, not text about fantasy football with your buddies. It's a great excuse to not answer the phone as well! "Sorry I was at the gym."
#4 - Respect the others at the gym.
You're not all alone and other people might want to use the machine you're on. Don't rest for 8 minutes in between sets, the appropriate time is 1 minute to 2 minutes max. Also let somebody work in with you, unless you are on really different lifting levels.
#5 - GTFO this thread if you're going to be a smart a$$. Trying to enlighten the OS family on proper etiquette.
Seriously, GTFO. The C you're straight because you're just being yourself.
#6 - Put the weights back where you got them
Why is there only one 35lb dumbbell on the rack and the other one chilling in the soda machine? Ok that's an exaggeration but put the damn weight back where you got it. Put dumbbells back in pairs because, you know, 80% of DB exercises require both weights.
#7 - If you move one of the benches to the Smith Machine, move it back when you're done.
Just because you want to do your bench press in that machine doesn't mean that's where the bench belongs. Put it back.
#8 - Wipe down the equipment.
Every gym will have some sort of device to aid you in this process. Find it, use it, make it a habit.
#9 - Don't do barbell curls and/or shrugs in the squat rack, unless your gym has 4+ squat racks.
Squat racks are meant for real men and they are usually limited at gyms because there are few real men out there. Squat/deadlift/do some crazy exercise or GTFO of the squat rack.
#10 - Use proper form when lifting.
If you need tips, go youtube some lifting vids. Don't be "that guy" who squats 305 but goes half an inch down and thinks it's a complete rep. That does nothing for you physically. Your pride, it might, but that's not gonna get you in better shape. Be man enough to admit it when you can't lift heavy weight somewhere. Lift what you can handle with proper form.
#11 - Don't eat in the gym during your workout.
There is no reason to have food during a workout. You can have a light snack before and something to replenish your system after. I have witnessed a woman eating a Snickers bar riding a stationary bike. Don't do that.
#12 - The gym is not a coffee shop.
If you see someone you know at the gym, keep the convo very short. It's a place for work, not socializing. If some hot female approaches you, give her your number or do whatever and then get back to work. With that said, do not approach girls you don't know anything about. They're at a gym and if they're in good shape you can assume two things:
1) They have a boyfriend/husband
2) Their boyfriend/husband is probably bigger and better looking than you
#13 - Do not spend over 1 hour in the gym to lift. No more than 2 hours if you do cardio.
If you're spending 2 hours in the gym lifting you're either a professional body building or taking way too long. Shorten up the time in between your exercises and quit wasting your time and hogging up the machines for too long. 1 hour of cardio is the CEILING and you should never do more, unless you're training for a marathon. If you spend over 2 hours in the gym lifting and doing cardio you're wasting too much time.
*If you're balling and have the hot hand and can't be beat, then you can go over two hours. Time flies when you're kicking people's a$$es on the court.
**Yes some gyms have basketball courts.
More will come soon...post some rules if you have them so we can give some folks ideas on what not to do at the gym.
