    Biggest Pet Peeve:

When I've got my back to the bucket in the post with some scrub on me and the dribble-happy guards won't get it to me. I usually have to take jump shots because no one wants to establish a post game in pick-up ball.

I'm a pretty strong shooter so I don't mind taking jump shots, but why take a jump shot when you can score at will down low?

    Open your eyes, guards.

Similar to that, when I actually do have the ball on the block (I get doubled almost every time down there) and a guards cuts down the paint and just STAYS there right under the rim and doesn't clear out, bringing himself and his man to totally clog up any space I'd have to operate. I love off-the-ball movement and I'll always hit an open man but for the love of god clear out if you don't get the pass, especially if you're 5'7.

You big guys have any dunking tips?

I can dunk my goal at my house fine (it's only 9 1/2 feet), but for some reason I can't get the ball to go down on a 10' goal. I get both myself and the ball more than high enough to dunk, but it's like I can't judge when I get the rim or something because instead of the ball going in it keeps going straight into the back of the rim and bouncing up.

It's probably something simple, I honestly haven't tried that much, but it's been bugging me because I really want to be able to dunk on a full size goal.

This may sound counter-intuitive but you may want to try dunking from a little further out. It's a theory, but it seemed to allow me to throw it in closer to the front of the hoop, rather than clanking off the back iron.

Clearly, the high-risers will throw it down through the hoop no matter where they take off but hitting the back iron is oftentimes consistant with a horizontal throwdown rather than vertical (almost throwing it at the rim once you're up there rather than throwing it down through the hoop). So, in my case, taking off a touch further out sometimes seemed to give me that little bit of breathing room to throw the ball into the hoop rather than off the hoop.

Typically when the ball flies off the rim like that it's because you're palming it/holding on to it for too long. Try doing some "light" dunks where you don't tomahawk it or try to snap down the rim to get the timing right.

Its probably too late at this stage...but I really want to develop more of a flat footed shot ala Hedo...I jump really high on my J, and when I get fatigued it really effects my jumper...

                Something you may already do...

Practice shooting form from close range, bending your knees, shooting with only your shooting arm. I'm talking like 2 or 3 feet from the bucket Only make swishes. When you make 5 in a row, take a step back and make 5 more in a row. Repeat until you get to the free throw line. Practice only on form and using your legs for power.

That's how I developed my current jumper, and it seems to be pretty fatigue-proof. Leg energy is used primarily as part of the shooting motion, and not as a way to elevate over defenders. It adds a lot of range, balance and accuracy to shots, but makes it a bit harder to get it off over defenders because you're not jumping for the sake of jumping. It's important you're able to create space off the dribble and that you really concentrate on footwork when shooting flat footed.

You're like 6'7, aren't you 24th? Like Hedo, who has a height advantage over most everyone who guards him, I don't think this would be a problem for you to change your shot.

Shouldn't be too hard. I'm 6'8 and the only time I really elevate any more is on a pull-up off the dribble. If it's catch-n-shoot am I'm shooting a set shot and don't get more than a few inches off the floor.

It's more upper body obviously but the key is to really make sure your feet/shoulders are square. When you elevate on your J I feel squaring up happens more naturally. Shooting a set shot you're more straight up and down so you can drift and fade more (like Hedo does a ton but he's so good it doesn't matter) since you're balance isn't as good standing straight up with little knee bending or jumping.

I think you're about the same age as me as well (late 20's) so sooner or later you won't have a choice anyways, lol, the athleticism will start to fade and a flat footed shot will be your only option.

Are there any drills to finish better at the rim?

Ive played Ball for quit some time and was always the kid who could make anyshot outside the paint but once im inside it I cant make anything

Today for instance, I got to the rim whenever I wanted which i usually do but I would miss 60% of the shots I put up, shots I feel I should make. The number was skewed probably because it got in my head and my body language was showing it and eventually I started missing everything for the most part

Are you talking about layups off the back board or floaters from 5'-10' out?

For layups it's just concentration IMO, make sure you get your eyes up at the target. Also, depending on the comp your facing, the whole "use the corner of the square on the backboard for layups" is pretty bogus and 1950's stuff. Get it higher up on the glass and make sure it's soft.

Thanks, Thats what i figured as far as layups and I can get pretty unfocused at times if the balls not rolling my way. Its just weird how i can hit these extremely hard difficulty of shots but at times i struggle to put the ball in from where it should be easiest

I just graduated from school and am looking to get back into basketball again, a little more seriously. Trying to join some leagues playing with some other guys my age, a few who played D1 ball, some currently in college playing ball, and some old high school stars around the area. Last time I was serious about basketball was my senior year of high school before I herniated a disk in my back and since then I've obviously lost a lot of athleticism (the little I originally had) and put on some weight.

I'm looking to regain some explosiveness. Was wondering what kinda stuff you guys would suggest as far as improving vertical leap, speed, first step and what kind of upper body muscles and core musclesI should focus on.

Also, I weigh about 210 now, the heaviest I've ever been, but I'd say if I cut my body fat down to about 10-15% it would be about 185-190 pounds. Should I try and lose weight, or just keep it on and try converting it into muscle?

Re: OS Hoopers....What are your balling tips?

I'm only 14 years old turning 15 in August so I don't have a wide range of talent. I'm about 5'9 and 130lbs with lengthy arms so I appear really scrawny! I play the guard position so I handle the ball most of the time. My tip is like everyone elses, play to your strengths. I play with some of my friends and they are just terrible thinking they could post up and throw those hook shots and just have it smack the backboard. I mix up my game quite a bit, most of the time I would just pull up for the jumper or pump fake and drive. If they don't fall for the fake and stick on me, I pull a step back and hit the J. I'm getting pretty consistent at that. If they do fall for the fake and a guy is waiting in the paint for me, I go for the runner. I'm not quite good at the floaters yet, but I am getting the hang of it. Also, don't be selfish if you know there is someone completely open and are capable of hitting that shot consistently give up the ball, unless you have a better shot yourself. I hate watching people try to lay it in with 2-3 guys on top of them and miss it when I see a couple people standing at the 12-15 ft range. Also don't be too unselfish where you have a good chance to score, but end up dishing it off because you are afraid others will call you a ball hog. Also, if you were tapped on the arm, chest, or wherever after you threw up the shot, don't call the foul. I really hate when people call those fouls, when obviously it did not affect the shot or harm the other person.
