    Re: Does anyone here stutter?

Supposedly I used to stutter a lot, around six years old or so (can't believe that I can't remember it). Now I sort of have that "secondary stutter," where I attempt to say a word (normally that has a vowel-sounding start to it) and I hesitate to say it until it's forced out. Normally it happens when I'm quoting a show or something. I don't know why it happens, so when it's happening I have to do filler stuff like, "Ah, wait... how does that line go again?" until it finally comes out.

(I do a lot of imitations and quotes, so that's why I used that as an example)

I'm a fine public speaker, otherwise. I also don't get that secondary stuttering when performing on stage, playing guitar and singing. I guess it normally happens when I think about it.

The best medicine is normal breathing. What happens, literally, is you stop breathing when this thing is happening to you. If I knew the exact cure for this, I would be free of it. I don't consider it a major problem for me, though... not so bad that anyone could really point it out or make fun of me for it.

You might try reading aloud and really try to pronunciate each syllable.... and also try and relax and think before you speak so you know exactly what you are trying to say- hope this helps!!

I don't stutter but I have a worse problem. I don't speak loud enough. To me I feel like I am very audible but I get "What?" all the time.

Same here, i feel like i mumble (but i know im talking clearly), or like my voice doesnt project. Almost seems like it doesnt get past the tip of my tongue when im talking. I know what im saying, but if im in a loud bar, unless i absolutely yell, if i maintain a regular speakign voice, no one can hear me and it aggravates the piss out of me.

Definitely. Nights after bars I'm usually horse because I have to put a lot of effort into speaking up.

A co-worker at my job stutters. He actually stutters worse when he is on the phone then when we talks to someone face to face.

I over project. People are always telling me to talk quieter.

No, it's pretty much second nature now, and no one around me, even my wife, notices it anymore. I don't hang on words or anything, I just pause or use different words all the time.

Wish I had some advice, my friend's kid has the same issue and he asked me the same thing, feel bad I can't help, but I've just lived my whole life this way.

This extra little bit of skin made it so that I could not extend my tounge outside of my mouth or even lift it to touch the roof of my mouth. It also impacted my speech and I had a bit of a slight stutter; usually when I got real excited.

When I was 6 or 7, I went to the doctor and he basically just snipped it with a pair of tongs to prop it up and stretch it out and some medical scissors. Since then everything is normal. Except I can gleek just by lifting my tounge, which was cool as a kid.

The actual name is Ankyloglossia and is more commonly known as tounge-tie.

I guess an easy check is to see if you can extend your tounge as far out of your mouth as most others.

                    Here is some more info:

Also kind of interesting, yesterday there was an article on CNNSI.com on Darren Sproles, who also suffers froma mild stutter.

That's pretty much what I have, but its not bad enough that it's had to be fixed. Sometimes I just really have to focus when I talk so I don't start slurring my speech

Wanted to bump this, since it's a 2 year old thread.

Went to speech therapy off and on for the past 2 years, with little results so I've finally stop going. It's still affecting me, but more so my confidence. My main thing I think is just being more confident about myself and my abilites. I really think getting in shape will help out tremendously with my self-confidence, which in turn will help with my stuttering. I continually practice different techniques every day, with varying results.

Any body else have stuttering issues?

                        Re: Does anyone here stutter?

I have a very slight stutter sometimes. It's from anxiety issues and sometimes my brain just locks up on me and I totally fumble my words. It's embarrassing, but made worse when someone points it out. My sister can be really cruel and she'll do the Billy Madison "t-t-today junior!" and it drives me crazy, she's lucky she's my sister or we'd probly have thrown down over it by now.

It can be pretty bad sometimes when my mind just completely freezes in the middle of a sentence because of anxiety overload and I'm just kinda hung there on whatever word I was using with no clue where my sentence was going.

Stuttering runs in my family. My sister, 2 uncles as well as several neices and nephew's. When my neices and nephews are around at times it seem's as if they are ashamed and I have to let them know it's ok, to take there time and to keep working at it as it will get better for them.

Was this post supposed to show the pauses involved in stuttering?

I don't stutter, but I do have problems clearly expressing what I want to say at times. I don't know. It's like sometimes I'll just start mumbling or I won't speak loud enough.
