    Does anyone here stutter?

    Just curious.

I have a small stuttering problem that rears its ugly head once in a while. It's not that I'll stutter, but rather that I'll freeze where no air is coming in and no air is coming out for me to say the words. Needless to say, it can be a bit embarassing for me.

My job requires me to be friendly with people both in person and on the phone. On the phone is definitely the worst for me. Lately my stutter has gotten worse and worse and I think its time for me to either see a speech therapist or do some reading on the subject.

Anyone have a similar problem? What are some of the ways you combat it?

This is exactly what happens to me...per wikipedia:

"Secondary stuttering behaviors are unrelated to speech production and are learned behaviors which become linked to the primary behaviors.

Secondary behaviors include escape behaviors, in which a stutterer attempts to terminate a moment of stuttering. Examples might be physical movements such as sudden loss of eye contact, eye-blinking, head jerks, hand tapping, interjected "starter" sounds and words, such as "um," "ah," "you know".[5][6] In many cases, these devices work at first, and are therefore reinforced, becoming a habit that is subsequently difficult to break.[6]

Secondary behaviors also refer to the use of avoidance strategies such avoiding specific words, people or situations that the person finds difficult. Some stutterers successfully use extensive avoidance of situations and words to maintain fluency and may have little or no evidence of primary stuttering behaviors. Such covert stutterers may have high levels of anxiety, and extreme fear of even the most mild disfluency."

    Re: Does anyone here stutter?

When I was younger, I add some extra skin/muscle fibers on the bottom of my lingual frenum (the piece of skin that connects the tounge to the bottom of the mouth). This extra little bit of skin made it so that I could not extend my tounge outside of my mouth or even lift it to touch the roof of my mouth. It also impacted my speech and I had a bit of a slight stutter; usually when I got real excited.

When I was 6 or 7, I went to the doctor and he basically just snipped it with a pair of tongs to prop it up and stretch it out and some medical scissors. Since then everything is normal. Except I can gleek just by lifting my tounge, which was cool as a kid.

The actual name is Ankyloglossia and is more commonly known as tounge-tie.

I guess an easy check is to see if you can extend your tounge as far out of your mouth as most others.

    Here is some more info:

Also kind of interesting, yesterday there was an article on CNNSI.com on Darren Sproles, who also suffers froma mild stutter.

      Re: Does anyone here stutter?

Sometimes I have a tendency to star slurring my words together when I speak for a long time and basically just start mumbling. I think this is because I get a lot of saliva in my mouth when I speak sometimes. I also tend to stutter a little bit in front of people I don't know.

I don't really consider it much of a problem, but it happens every now and then.

i'm actually surprised that the phone isn't helping you ... i've had a couple of employees who stuttered and when i made them learn to take orders on the phone, it actually helped over time.

                  Re: Does anyone here stutter?

I have a pretty severe case of stuttering, actually. It's weird though, some days I won't stutter at all and then other days I can barely get a word out. Mine is similar to your case, Wazzu. I just freeze up and I can't get the word out most of the time.

I used to go to speech therapy but it never really helped, so I stopped going. I wish there was a way I could limit it, but I've pretty much grown to just try and ignore it.

I stutter and have problems pronouncing certain words.

Went to a speech therapist for the first 15 or so years of my life, but stopped going because I wasn't getting anywhere.

Yeah that's me too. I'll go for a few months with real no problem, probably because I'm not thinking about it. But the past 2 months, it's been bad. It sucks too because my salary factors commission in it and I sometimes feel not as confident which reflects my selling abilities in my job.

I think I'm going to buy a couple books and work on some things, but does anybody have any other tips?

I stutter sometimes, more so when I was young, my brother always made fun of me growing up.

I know a kid now who can't speak without stuttering. I make fun of him.

I personally think it is extremely immature to make fun of someone else's speech impediment and is in no way comical.
