    Boy Shoots Parents, Games Blamed

What a joke. "The Halo 3." Ridiculous.

EDIT: I thought he was 7, not 17.

January 14, 2009 - A judge in Ohio has found a 17-year-old boy guilty of shooting his parents in 2007 after they argued about whether he should be allowed to play Halo 3. The Entertainment Consumers Association's blog GamePolitics.com has a transcript of the judge's statements about the case, and they are highly critical of videogames.

Testimony during the trial attempted to prove that the boy, Daniel Petric, was insane, but Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge found that the evidence wasn't sufficient to support that defense, finding the boy guilty instead (Petric's mother died in the shooting). However, the judge had much to say on videogames' supposed role in the tragedy. Burge said Petric was so immersed in the world of videogames that he no longer had the ability to anticipate the consequences of his actions.

"I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea at the time he hatched this plot that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever," the judge said.

Burge goes on to explain that the judicial system has much to learn about gaming, a statement that we tend to agree with after reading the rest of the judge's statements on the topic:

This Court's opinion is that we don't know enough about these video games. In this particular case, not so much the violence of the game because I believe in the Halo 3, what it amounts to is a contest to see who can shoot the most aliens who attack.

It's my firm belief that after a while the same physiological responses occur that occur in the ingestion of some drugs. And I believe that an addiction to these games can do the same thing. The dopamine surge, the stimulation of the nucleus accumbens -- the same as an addiction. Such that when you stop, your brain won't stand for it.

Petric was found guilty of the aggravated murder of his mother and the attempted aggravated murder of his father, a reverend.

I hope he enjoys his time in jail. That is pathetic and what gives us guys who play video games a bad rep.

So he was a fan of 24 as well?

This actually took place very close to my hometown.

I hope this scum rots in jail. Anyone over the age of 4 that blames their problems on Video Games needs to beaten with sticks.

Why can't people just take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming everything under the sun for why they did what they did...

This has been a pretty hot topic on Cleveland talk radio. Most people agree its ridiculous to blame the game.

I don't understand how a video game can be blamed for erasing common sense from a person.

If the parents let him play the game would they have been shot? So in away the game is to blame, literally!

I will say this and I know everyone disagree, but the brain is a very complex thing. So things you put into it can cause so damage down the road. I am not saying you are going to go kill someone if you play Grand theft auto, but I will say one thing. How do you justified playing a game like that? What is fun about killing people and running people over? I am just curious. I never liked games like that, but I don't really care if people do. I just like to know why do you like it?

It's something to do. I would never take those actions to a real life situation though.

Have you ever seen an action movie before? Why do you like the action scenes? If you do of course.

I've always thought that a God figure wouldn't be out of line judging people by how they act in video games (outside of forced progression). Somewhat of a "what would you do without laws" type of situation. Obviously it's not real, but just throwing it out just for fun.

Grand Theft Auto is the ultimate stress relief. That is why I play it.

This kid, however, blames Halo 3.

I don't play them a lot, but I know my reasons.

It's the very same as the reason why I may watch a movie that's similar in theme.

It's fantasy, and I know it is. I have no desire to run around and kill people with my hands, but the characters in these games feel that they do. I am controlling a character, and I understand that his goal is to kill or be killed.

It's not a stress relief. It's not me acting out through a means of entertainment. It's just a game with a story. There are books that involve killing and murder. Books allow for more imagination. But, I don't read books to fill my life with blood and gore. I read them because it's a story. I play games and watch movies because it's a story, and I'm interested in knowing how these fictional characters will handle their dilemma.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

i always thought if your mind can't tell the difference between a video game and real life than there is obviously something wrong with you and you deserve everything you get. please let this boy rot in jail for life and give him extra slippery soap.
