    Vocal Cord Polyps

Any of you guys ever have one? I just found out yesterday that I do. My voice has sounded like crap for a few months now. It all started with a terrible cold and cough I had. My voice went to crap during that and it just never got better. Since I use my voice professionally, my boss finally urged me to see a doctor.

Apparently, this is a pretty common condition for people who use their voice a lot in their jobs. Singers get them a lot...teachers too.

I'm going to have a small surgery to remove it...sometime within the next 2-3 weeks. It's an easy outpatient surgery and I won't be able to talk at all for a week afterwords. Once I start talking again, my voice will be really rough at first but gradually, it should get back to where it was prior to the polyp forming.

I was just curious if any of you have had one or have known someone who did...and how long it took to get back to normal. The doctor said within a month or two, I should be back to normal but I'd love to hear some of your experiences, if any of you have had this.

    Wish me luck, fellas!

hope you get to feeling better TJ and good luck with the surgery.

I don't know of anyone thats had this illness. And I'm sure you're wife is happy to know that you won't be able to talk for a week.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I know people who have had them. Some are a big deal, some aren't (as far as the seriousness of the condition) Good luck TJ

Thanks, brother. The doctor said mine is pretty small and looks like it'll be fairly easy to remove. That's certainly a relief.

                Re: Vocal Cord Polyps

I think this condition is called "vocal nodes" in the singing world. Many singers attain this condition when they don't "zip up" their vocal cords or practice good breathing techniques. I had studied this a few years ago as I was training my singing voice with my teacher.

Just a list of famous singers who were linked to this condition:

                Robert Plant
                Justin Timberlake
                Mariah Carey
                Madonna
                Rod Stewart
                Miley Cyrus
                Freddy Mercury
                Whitney Houston

It is a very common condition, mostly attracted by those who's profession requires them to be using their voices in loud environments (teachers, actors, musicians, etc.). Good luck with the surgery and I hope everything goes well!

Heh, the only person I know who got these is Sage Francis.. he used to get them bad pretty regularly. If you'd catch him towards the end of a tour, his voice was completely shot. I guess he saw a vocal coach a year or so ago and they corrected some of the straining that he was doing (even as a non-singing rapper, you strain when on stage).

Good luck with the surgery. Now's the time to work on a system of winks and/or get a bell that you can annoy the hell out of your significant other with.

It just means you TALK to much. But in your line of work it happens. Good luck and talk less if you can.

Well...today's the day. I'm due in at the hospital at 11am. Surgery is scheduled for 12:30. The wife and I ate at Golden Corral (all you can eat buffet) last night since as of midnight last night, I'm not allowed to eat or drink anything. And after today, I'm not allowed to talk again until next Wednesday. That's probably going to be the hardest thing to do.

                              Wish me luck, fellas!
