      You OLD goat...
What the heck are you doing still putting your a$$ out there!?
Hang up the belt...kick up those feet, enjoy yourself and be proud of your service.
32 years?! Heck, I know I can do 30 years in F.D......I just think I'd be toast if I would have tried any more than 20 in P.D.
      God bless you.

Thanks Knight, I hear you. Problem is that those thirty two years have been split with three different agencies. I will have 25 this summer with my current agency and will be elgible to go. Retirement benefits are pretty good so I am seriously considering it. I'm not on the street anymore, I'm an SRO, but would definately go if I were still working the street.

          Ahh...

          No 20 and out, huh?
          That's a beautiful thing as a uniformed force member(P.D.-F.D.) here in N.Y.C.
Twenty years of service....NO AGE requirement and you can retire half pay.
We also get the variable supplement(12 grand per year right now), so most guys are going.
There was a time here in the F.D.N.Y. that you wouldn't START thinking of retirement until 30 years.
They are letting guys bank the variable supp if you stay past 20...so that's a plus(in other words...you don't lose that 12 grand for not retiring...it goes into an account for you which you can then take or roll into your 457)
One other good thing about our pensions.....P.D. and F.D. are the same system here(and plenty of others) ...so if you do some time in P.D. and then move on UP .....the time for both counts towards retirement up front.
They had so many guys going from P.D. to F.D. because of this...that they actually got it into one of the recent(3-4 years ago)contracts that any moves over...the guy has to start at base pay. BIG hit.
We actually had former P.D. DETECTIVES ....SARGES...and even one LT! at one time in my firehouse! Crazy, huh?
You don't see that much anymore.

Stay safe guys and good luck Kearnzo!

                    Re: Any police officers here?

Remember, what you learn in the academy is soon "untaught" when you go into field training. Joking a bit, but FTO is much harder than the academy.

I was an FTO too, but I never liked putting a trainee under some of the stress that some of the other FTOs did, just thought it was unnecessary. FTO itself is stressful enough, and when it's over you give out a big sigh of relief.

When I got into a squad car, my first night out of FTO, all by my lonesome, I made my first traffic stop. That danged academy training came back and as I got out of my car I locked the drivers side door. Too bad I didn't take my car keys with me, lol.

And remember, you're not getting in this job to save the world. You are there to, without sounding cheesy, protect and serve and go home safely to your family at night. Believe me the police departments are really good at replacing you and not thinking a second thing about it. When you're gone, there's somebody else to take your place.

I looked at your avatar and read the story and I thought Aaron was switching jobs and was going to become a police officer.

The only tips I have are go into the academy in good shape and stay under the radar.

It's a lot easier if you don't have to worry about the physical fitness aspect so you can focus on the mental aspect. Staying on top of the mental aspect will keep you under the radar. One of the sweetest parts of my 6 month academy was Week 10 or so when the Sergeant looked at me and wanted to know if I was new.

It's the best job in the world as far as I'm concerned. I work 4 days a week, made great money last year, and have a pension when I retire. The academy is tough but it's worth it when you hit the streets. Best of luck...

that is definitely spot on. Staying under te radar is the best but also remembering that sometimes you'll get in trouble even for doing nothing wrong. Everything is a test to see how you handle every situation. Going into the academy in good shape already puts a person ahead of the game. By "good shape" i mean the ability to run about 4 miles EVERY SINGE DAY because that's what wil be expected of you once the academy starts

Agreed too, best job in the world. I never work more than 3 days in a row and get paid very well along the way. Love it.

On Saturday we took our "fun run".....five miles. Loved it. Lots of circuit training type runs too, run the length of a football field, 20 pushups, get up and run the football field again, 20 leg raises, runs the football field again, well, you get it.

lol, yeah, we used to do the same thing, stop every few minutes of the run to do either pushups, leg lifts, or crunches..
